For starters, deserts etc. I'm guessing you can't use normal slate as it would need to be treated. Anywhere in Dublin that sells them?

You can buy them online from Nisbets:

    or Russums:

As an aside, the use of slates as plates is one of the most annoying developments in eating out over the past few years. It is needless wankery. Plates are fine - they have a raised edge, and a flat surface in the middle. They are as fine an example of fit for purpose as has been designed.

I'm not proposing to use them for serving steak on or anything that needs to be cut with a knife! Tapas and deserts mainly. I think they enhance the presentation of certain foods and I certainly wouldn't call it needless wankery!

Not in your case OP, but in some establishments, i would say the phrase is very apt.
