Housemate using packet sniffing software

I have a hunch that my housemate has been using packet sniffing software on our wifi connection due to recent references to different protocols and the use of Cain&Abel for stealing passwords as well as other hints in conversation.

To be honest, I feel very uneasy about this. I have some IT experience and understand have used Wireshark previously for college projects but I have never spied on anyone before.

Has anyone ever been in a similar situation? Any ideas for confirming this or getting some sort of revenge? I am planning on creating an unlisted blog for his viewing pleasure where I "plan" to slowly poison my housemates...that should be some bit of fun from it all :)

Sharing a network with other users is always a risk.

You can do is use a secure connection whereever possible e.g. https for web based email etc.

Also you can setup a software firewall on your laptop.

You could confirm this is by providing false information that he would then use that you can track that he used it or else try something like this:

    Otherwise just hack him too.

If you are sharing your house with someone you don't trust then move. Beside the computer side of things there may be other issues.

    It's hardly healthy.

Back to your aims, if your traffic is unencrypted then everyone in the house, the ISP, the NSA etc can see it.

Ideally route all traffic through a VPN based outside the house. There are loads of VPNs. One based in the UK will also allow you to view the BBC iplayer.

Another thing is usually everyone has access to the router

    try visit:
    http://192.168.1.1
    or
    http://192.168.1.254

If someone in the house decides to change settings here (such as DNS) it can affect your use. For safety use OPEN DNS servers or for sanity just move.
