When you put something marked as "on sale" doesn't that product have to have been, for a certain period, priced at the higher price? I'm sick of every time Aer Lingus has a sale (currently 20% off), their fares mysteriously inflate so that when 20% is taken off it's at the same or a higher price than when the sale began.

"On sale" doesn't mean a discount (every airline ticket is on sale), but "20% off" does.
There's no fixed period in law for how recently the higher price was used but the NCA consider any "28 consecutive days in the 3 months before the price was reduced" as a reasonable period.
In other words, if you abide by these guidelines and don't mislead, it's all legit and then the NCA won't take any action.

The definition of "a reasonable time" is not specified by law, but our guidelines state that goods should have been on sale for 28 consecutive days in the 3 months before the price was reduced.
