Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Could you live without love?

Could you live without love? Well if your asking that to yourself on your death bed you have either lived with or without it..Stupid question.

That would be an excellent point if anyone had mentioned someone on their deathbed asking themselves that question.

So what's your opinion on the matter?

Love is not a necessity to survive.
But as a human being, it is a pointless life without love. I don't mean that in any religious sense, but if you have no love for/from your family or a partner/children, then you are merely surviving with little joy or any purpose as far as I can see.

OP, when you say love, do you mean alcohol?

    if so, then no

I feel I'm halfway toward my deathbed as is. I know there's love in me somewhere it's just buried very deeply. I do have my daughter who I know I love and care about, more than life itself and while I see that as the only legacy of love I leave behind it's very much a parental kind of love, and rarely reciprocated (they never realise how much you gave a sh/t until your dead kind of love).

I don't think it's as neccessary to be loved by someone but I think it definitely helps if you have someone to love.
or as Lao Tse said "Being deeply loved by someone gives you strength, while loving someone deeply gives you courage."

anyway, I'm just trying to get there on my own.

All the problems in this world have been caused by love or the lack of it.

Like all the best things in life, love can be an intensely painful experience if you do it right. I still couldn't live without it, not without the opportunity to love someone else anyway. I think I could get by being loved, that's important but maybe not essential so long as you get the chance to really give a damn about another human being.

I've been madly in love, after it all relationships just never seem to bring the same feelings so on my death bed I (As of now) would miss that love for me but hopefully when I'm seconds from kicking it I'll have the good fortune of a women that loves me as much as I love her. Knowing how good it feels I would really miss it, not knowing it would be a life incomplete.

    I love you, mikemac.

    Do you.........love me?

    He never replied.

Why won't you answer me?! What have I done? It's my nose, isn't it? My hair? Ears? I can change, I swear. Maybe I came on too strong? Yes, that's it. Answer me!

    *drops to knees*

    You're tearing me apart, mike!!!

I think most people mistake lust for love.
That heart stopping feeling that you cant live without that person,
That yearning to know what the other person is doing,
That thought that the day will not go quickly enough until you see that person,
That gasping breathless moment until you are physically near to that person,
That watching, waiting, for contact from that person.
And when that person has left you side, the anticipation of return,

I have been for a while now. My last relationship nearly destroyed me so I've just frozen that whole concept out of my life for now and I'm just getting on with what makes me happy. It might come around again and it might not, honestly does not bother me either way.

When the person you love loves you back its the greatest feeling in the world.
When they don't or when they stop its horrible :(

Lust is wanting to go to bed with someone
Love is wanting to wake up with them

    Don't get me wrong
    I'm ALL for lust
    It's just not love
Love is cleaning up the puke after the person has had the swine flu
Love is watching that person getting older and changing
Love is tolerating the person when a tribunal in Brussels would have sent them down
To me, love is something that takes YEARS to develop
    Our generation is Hollywood-afied
It's not the case, love is not the movies

No because anytime spent with the person is time well spent ;)

If you were on your deathbed and realised you'd never loved or been in love, would you regret it?

I mostly mean romantic love, but it could also apply to strong familial or platonic love.

I think it's best to have at least some close intimate relationships, but I also think that a life without that but with good friends and a job/activities you enjoy would be pretty good.

For balance, here are two contrasting studies on the topic with different outcomes:

    www.sciencetoday/lifeandlove.com

    www.sciencetoday.com/livingwithoutlove.com

Yes but it maybe hard to regret never been "in love" if you dont know what it feels like to begin with
But once you know what it feels like it can be like a drug - the love drug

Love is the refuge of people who have nothing better to do :)

But in all seriousness, as I get older there are so many things I find stimulating I'm confident I'd be happy living alone. Love is certainly the easiest way to feel very happy though.

I want both but if I had to choose between making time for everything else and love, love would get the chop.

    I get that
    BELIEVE ME
I get the lust thing, and that is the starting point for practically every relationship that has ever began
    But that's not love
It maybe the sparkplugs but it's not the engine

I just got my heart ripped out of my chest and trampled on. Literally in the last 2 hours, I'm numb. Completely numb. Love has left me now and I will be without it for a very long time.

I don't believe in love. Every relationship has a time limit.

How can you not believe in love...that's the same as saying you don't believe in jealousy or sadness or happiness. Human emotions aren't something you believe in or not!

As for the time limit thing, these couples would probably disagree with you...

In the year 2525, 'love' will be classified as a mental illness.

And we will have to wear light bulbs on our heads so the cops can see us at all times.

Also means certain rejection as you approach people
Means a lot of risk as you open yourself up to someone
And someone if they turn spiteful could hurt you by blabbing to your mutual friends. Well I'm thinking more of an office romance turned sour here and stories that go around the office. Some could not handle that at all or be able to laugh it off

You say worthless but being cold and cautious also means zero risk and no hurt.
Just the other side you know

Rejection only gets when you don't love and accept yourself.

You are good enough as you are.

Only if you let that happen.
Open up your heart and your legs, and love will spread it's wings and hover around your body like a dove/hummingbird hybrid, eager to crash it's waves of throbbing, psychedelic love against the white, sandy beach of your body and mind.

You are good enough as you are.
Are you sure you're in the right century?

These days, "good enough" is not good enough any more, and no, that's not an oxymoron. Whatever you have, you will be looked down upon for not having more; whatever you do, you will be blamed for not doing more. Whatever it is, you don't have enough of it.

Death has this much to be said for it:
You don’t have to get out of bed for it.
    Wherever you happen to be
    They bring it to you—free.

I could live a very fulfilled life without romantic love, assuming I had other kinds of close family relationships and friendships to sustain my emotional health.

But I believe that no matter how fulfilled and happy my life would be if I remained single, that it would be greatly enhanced by a loving and supportive partner and a shared history and planned future together. I would also like to have kids and raise them with their father.

Not essential, but the cherry on the cake.

The mutual and total acceptance of 2 people toward each other. But that is romantic love. Love can be one sided, you could totally accept someone else but that may not be reciprocated.

Love is "never having to say your sorryyyy", but it turns out Ryan O Neil was a cutn, according to Tatum.
