Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

99 VW Polo brake lights stay on when car is off

I have a 99 VW Polo and there seems to be a problem with the brake light switch. Sometimes the brake pedal doesn't come all the way up and the brake lights stay on.

This isn't the problem though as I am sure I can remedy that issue by replacing the brake light switch the pedal contacts or adjusting the brake pedal so that it comes all the way up.

My issue is that the brake lights stay on even when the key is not in the ignition.

My question here is should the brake lights go off when the key is not in the ignition? The brake lights were on all day and they drained the battery. If they are supposed to go off when the key isn't in the ignition does anyone know how to fix this?

    Thanks.

Are you sure the brake pedal has come back all the way? Try pulling it back towards you while the key is still out of the ignition and see if that makes the lights go off, even temporarily.

Oh and your brake lights can definitely still work with the key out of the ignition.

Sounds like the brake light switch to me. Common problem in polo. It's located around brake pedal if memory serves me right.
