VHI - What to do when you see a specialist who charges a lot

I need to see a psychiatrist at some point, he happens to specalise in the condition I have and the only other specialist (the one I used to go to who charged €80 per appointment) in Ireland retired a few months ago. I was about to setup an appointment until I found out he charges €370 for a single appointment. From what I remember, VHI will only pay up to €70 for a psychiatric appointment. Theres no way I could afford to pay €300 like that. My last psychiatrist had me see him 6 months which was grand but now I don't know what to do. If I explain the situation to this psychiatrist, would he be legally able to split the appointment up to make it appear as multiple appointments or would that constitute insurance fraud?

That would be fraud, as you would be claiming multiple times for the one visit. The doctor probably wouldn't agree to it either, as he would risk being black listed by the insurer.

Have you checked if he sees public patients and how long his public waiting list is? He might only see private patients, but it's no harm checking anyway.
