hey hows it going? first time posting here - dont know if anyone can help but its worth a shot. im very interested in the ancient world - particularly ancient warfare. im just after starting persian fire by tom holland but im looking for more books detailing ancient battles and warfare in general.

can anybody give me some suggestions? im not an academic by the way so nothing too complex if its possible!

    thanks!

For books focusing on the how and whys of Greek classical forces, books by Victor Davis Hanson are amongst the best - an early introductory of his would be "The Western Way of War: Infantry Battle in Classical Greece" which traces why the Greeks fought in hoplite formation and how their approach to battle still influences modern military thinking.
