Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

im new here. my first post. i've been reading and not posting for a while. i feel like my inanity wll go down well here. feel free to have an old slag. and i dont mean get personal with my mother. and i mean that. if you mention her you fail to see the big picture. i know my ma and shes a big picture.
All joking aside, what im trying to figure out is, why, in this day and age,
    do firemen have poles.
FFS if theres an amercency wouldnt it be better they were on the ground nstead of some rambo race to the pole knd of thing,. im just concerned about
the state of the emergency services.
justify the pole and ll leave off yis.thanks.the missus.

I'm concerned about the state of your paragraph.

Also, if we removed the poles all the firemen would fall through the holes.

    point remains.

because they hope that if they continue going down the poles eventually 50s will slip into their back pocket! ;)

    A lack of space.

Ground floor is taken up with equipment, vehicles and offices.

Also when they are not fighting fires they use the poles to practice their routine for stripping at hen parties.

cause they are all puddle jumpers and like sliding down poles

i cant properly quote your post,

on account of my newness, can you smell it?

    thought not.

bur that is such a sexist remark.
not all ladies like a stripping fireman. only nine in ten.

please rephrase as a gender neutral slur

Until 1878, spiral staircases or sliding chutes were common, but not particularly fast. Fire houses were also equipped with spiral staircases so the horses would not try to climb the stairs into the living quarters

    Seriously horses climb stairs

so it took them from 1878 til now to realise we have mobiles, internet etc. come on.
    give me a break.
its all tradition. they just love sliding down the old pole.
and fair play to them. they dont have a lot of time off, take what you can get

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,115 ✭✭✭Pdfile

kind of knew thisd detior\ate into madness but can someone honestly answer the queston it because the horses used to stink? actually quite like to know why.

love some jokes as well but ultimately why do firemen live on the first floor.

yeah they look cool sliding on down, but is it necessary?

Firehouses in cities were small and it is cheaper to build up than out, trucks went downstairs while people were upstairs. fastest way from a to b is by pole.

    I told ya!

    Why don't you believe me?!

i was expecting this to develo[p into a semi serious dscussion,

    im disappoited,

i just wanted to improve fire services. and i mean globally.

if i could make a small differenece, like them all living on th ground

floor i reckon i could cut fire deaths by whatever percent they clsim to be now minus the

thye deaths by fire which could be prevented using ky ides.

yeah its funnyy but it can alsao save lives

In my town the firemen don't even sleep in the station. They get a call on their beeper and they drive into the station.

You should present your well researched findings to the Dail! We could move all firestations to Bungalows that don't have stiras!

They're right you know, this is exactly why (except the offices were often upstairs too).

Fire stations where there was plenty of space (e.g. Galway City) were sometimes built on one level.

Not sure it really saves time tho, the other advantage of the pole system is that you get from A to B using gravity.
