    Hi All,

I'm looking to get some recommendations for a document management system with some graphical way of displaying a work flow and associated documents for development projects. The basic idea would be for each project to have a work flow, which shows how everything relates graphically, then you can click on each word/pdf document which will open up etc...

When a new project is created a template is used to generate the work flow with blank documents that need to be modified / uploaded. Would obviously need to handle document approvals / revisions.

Ideally it would be web based as we have people working form remote sites. Has anyone used anything open source to do this? Don't mind paying for a commercial product either, if its the right one.

It's not exactly what you are asking for but Bonitasoft is an Eclipse based system that allows you to define a process in BPMN.

It has a large array of predefined interfaces (connectors in its terminology) to other technologies & applications - such as Alfresco DMS, databases, exchange, google, SAP, SugarCRM, MS Sharepoint and much more... that can be integrated into the processes.

It will also can use the BPMN to generate a Web based solutions that drives the process.

I found it while looking for a BPMN diagramming tool and only experimented with the connectors and web application generation - there are some nice examples/demos online. I found it very impressive.

But perhaps a simpler pure DMS is what you need... There are many open source DMS; Alfresco, mentioned above, is popular open source DMS as is eXo DMS which includes workflow.

Sharepoint Foundation Server provides this out of the box and it's free. For the more complex features you may need to get Sharepoint standard which is not cheap though.

And with SharePoint, you can use Visio both to design your workflows, and to show their current status.
