Hi. I had some melon and a nutri-grain bar pretty much straight after . I had plenty of water aswell . Thanks for your reply.

I'd be eating a little more than that after a 15 mile LSR, but everybody is different. I try have something fairly decent within an hour of finishing my run. You loose alot of salt running to and have to try and replace that.

    Hi everyone,

Week 11 is ready to go (someone check the dates :P)

I've added a new sheet which will stay as the last sheet as the weeks progress. It's a sheet where if you like (no pressure to do so) you can fill in what your expected finishing time will be. If you have a particular goal time that's what you enter - if like me you're in the let's just finish it enter what time you think you will be finishing in. The concept here is to let everyone see who is going to be in and around them on the day. If you know a handful of fellow boardsies are aiming / expecting for the same times it may be a good idea to hook up on the day. Again that's a personal choice. :)

The goal times will become clearer after the upcoming half marathon but I'm sure there's lots here who have a fair idea what they will be aiming for on the day already.

Good idea:) Have a general idea from Macmillan using my Clontarf half time in July but be interesting to see how the Phoenix park one goes in 2 weeks and make a decision on that (10 miler last wk was actually at a worse pace July half so hoping just an off day..:().

It's a long distance on your own so starting off with those on similar time good idea. Plus if you're like me and between pacers (only 4.30 and then 5.00 I believe whereas I'm going for around the 4.45 mark..) fellow runners can help keep you on track

Based on advice here though, just gonna see how I feel on the day and adjust pace accordingly, rather have an enjoyable time to the end and finish at the 5hr mark for my 1st one then kill myself to get the 4.30 and collapse over the line...

Hi thanks for the reply maybe not hydrated during the day as much as i should if its just dehydration then it is something that can be fixed .Thanks for the reply again though .

I'd imagine the issue is rooted in re hydrating and replacing electrolytes you can buy drinks that'll replace some of the salts you lose through sweating. Probably an idea to have a little more to eat after aswell as your bodies probably running on empty.

Sure keep an eye on it if it gives you cause for concern mention it to your GP most answers on here will be based on personal experiences as opposed to medical experience. :D

Hey Guys, the miles/Km are creeping up nicely now... the long LSR will be new territory for a lot of you, so please please make sure your are well rested, properly fed and hydrated and you should be ok...remember everyone has a tough run now and again, don't let one bad run beat you, remember how far you have come and remember to stay positive...
    You can do it!!
    Enjoy!!:D

Hi all, Newbie to this thread .
Just a question if anyone can help. Does anyone suffer from dizziness after there LSRs or is is just myself . Did my 15 mile today and the run itself was fine but later on in the day started feeling quite dizzy and confused and I was in work which was not good. I had the same after my 13 mile LSR last week .Its just a bit worrying or is it something that i should just expect to happen .
    Thankful for any replies.

I'd say this is a combination of tiredness and not eating enough. It would be a good idea not to do your lsr's on the same day as you're working.
This has happened me in the past and I know in my case it was from poor diet and lack of sleep.
Also as I'm sure you have read....you need to hydrate from the day before a long run as well as the day of the run.

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,724 ✭✭✭Dilbert75

It's quite possibly related to hydration and all the above advice is good, along with the need to get more sleep, but...

Did you start running recently? Did you have a health check before you started training for the marathon? Even stuff like getting your blood pressure checked is simple but important.

Any quick suggestions for a gel alternative ?

Am heading out in half an hour for my LSR of 15 miles (:):(:D:eek:) covers the range of emotions thinking about it !

I don't have any gels here (tried the high 5 ones last over 10 mile LSR and they were grand) but I do have a few shops along the planned route. Would a lucozade sport or two along the way do the same thing ?

Had a very tough 17 mile LSR on Sunday. I was hanging on in the end and had to take a few walking breaks in the last 4 KMs. It is disheartening to think that there is another 15 KM left to do, but as has been pointed out this is training and hopefully by the end of it we will be prepared. I am using HH Novice 2 program which maxs out at 20 miles and it will be interesting to see how I cope with an extra 10KM more than my longest training run while at the same time trying to run it faster.

Just reading some of the threads and I am starting to think my new runners which I got a few weeks ago are not all that great. I have blisters forming after each run and my feet are in a bad way. I also felt like I could feel every bit of the road.

Donal - here's my story with the Asics Nimbus 13.

I started running with Nimbus 11, was very happy with them so a year later I stuck with Nimbus 12 and earlier this year went in and confidently said goodbye to 145 precious friends for Nimbus 13.

Almost immediately I noticed brand new leg aches, a little like shin splints but different, plus achy ankles, the works. I worried about it for ages and then admitted to myself that it all dated from the new runners.

Eventually (about 4-6 weeks later) I went into Amphibian King. They said "Asics wanted to make the Nimbus 13 lighter so they took a lot of the support out of the heel" and he bent the heel down with one finger. I was disgusted. Barely 6 weeks of running with 145 euro runners?

Anyway, if you can change your order now I would. If you can't then I really hope you don't require the same support I obviously do and get on all right with them.

The moral of the story is - always buy in a specialised running shop...

    Fingers crossed for you Donal!

    Mulberry.

    Hey Mulberry,

thanks for the advice, appreciate it. Its actually the opposite for me though. When I started running just over two years ago I used Nimbus 12's, then last year when I bought a new pair it was a different asics runner cos it was on sale and that was when I got the achilles problems.

So then I switched back to the Nimbus 13's last year and have been running really comfortably in them since(and actually I did the gait analysis that time as well and the Nimbus were a good match for me).

This time I went online to buy the Nimbus 13's again because they have been perfect for me. Like you I am a bit wary of the differeent model numbers and didn't want to buy the new model, Nimbus 14's, in case there were new changes that didn't suit me. But most of the shops only have the newest ones (more €€€'s!) so I had to get them online.

Interesting cos I'm running with the Nimbus 13 now! Got gait analysis last yr and recommended the Nimbus 12 so when needed new one's in April I picked up these (at the time didn't realise was different number.... :o). Haven't noticed any problems with them luckily but just think this highlights need for proper analysis before buying as everyone different..

Oh - tip, Asics shop in Kildare Village outlet has great deal., You mention €165 for the nimbus 13, I only paid about €80 back in April...They cnat give same level of expert advice but once you know what runners you want can save a bit of money

Thanks for the tip FiiFii, thats a great price! i got them online at sportsshoes.com and they were €109 with free delivery (pricey but worth it for the peace of mind that I know they suit me perfectly!) I wonder do the Asics shop in Kildare only stock the newest models or do they have a selection. Will definitelty check them out next time :D

Donal the last time there was running stuff in lidl I got a pair of ankle supports. Sometimes my ankles feel a bit weak after a long run/pace run and I find them great to put on then for a few hours. I think they were only about 9 euro.

Hey thanks Careermove, do you wear them during the run or just for a few hours after?? Will definitely try that if I can pick up a pair somewhere cheap enough. My ankles were fine after a few hours but definitely felt weak for a while.

Ran my 25km (15mile) LSR on Sat afternoon. Wasn't looking forward to it as I normally run early on Sat while it's still nice and cool and I did my back in shovelling sand on Sat morning. I hydrated from early Sat morning and brought a gel with me for the first time.

The course I run is quite hilly in parts and had 2 X 8.5km loops and ended with a long climb to peak and then downhill to home. I saved the gel until 15km so it would kick in for my last climb. I was dreading it as I hear a lot of people here saying they are hard on the stomach. I was quite surprised when it actually tasted nice (berry flavour) and when I looked at my times I definitely did speed up. [Took 2hrs 37 mins for 25.04km]

I know it was an LSR and I should have been running slower but I was just so chuffed that the run went so well after my bad 14mile LSR 2 weeks ago.

Terrible fifteen mile run today. My little one is sick and had me up a lot last night so was tired anyway. Just couldn't get into my stride. Shuffled along and walked last three miles. Very disheartened. Think the heat worn me out too. Had great runs during the week so hopefully just a once off. Also will have to download a book or listen to nothing as suggested. Music drove me mad by the end of run/walk.:'(

    Hi Dechol,

know the feeling. Sometimes the tiredness from a nights broken sleep, especially when worried about little ones, really hits you, especially if trying to do an LSR the morning after! Put it down to a one off bad run, miles still in the bank, and move on, and you'll be flying again next week. Also I defintiely recommend an audi book, but definitely something light (ie something that would be an easy read).

I only wear them after....my ankles are fine when I'm running its just after they seem a bit weak. Pretty similar to what you're saying. I put the supports on for a few hours usually while I'm doing stuff with horses and next day they're perfect :)

It was 65 euro which is the cost of a usual visit, she did some work on me and gave me some new stretches. I thought running was a cheap form of exercise before I started out, I was wrong!

I paid 60 for a check up, massage and he recommended me some exercises. Its well worth going if at all possible, he managed to diagnose some weaknesses I would never have even guessed were causing me problems!

jebus this running lark is starting to get expensive I wouldn't mind paying €60 if it included a massage but as €60 is hard to come by these days I'l be goin old fashioned and toughing it out :D

Some may call it massage, I would say torture session :-D
It may be worth shopping around, getting a few prices or even keeping an eye on deals sites for sport massages.

Then go and have a sports massage from a recommended physio who preferably runs themselves, it will iron out any niggles you may have and they should also be able to offer advice on stretching etc.

If you miss a few days on this thread you have a good few pages to read to catch up.

Thankfully I did my lsr on Friday as ended up drinking most of Saturday due to Amercian Football and party that night but the good thing was I was so dying o Sunday meant I wouldn't be hitting the beer on Sunday for the GAA. So I look at that in a positive.

Back running tomorrow morning after a nice few days off apart from dying on Sunday. It is the longest week on HHN2 but feeling confident about doing the 36 miles this week. Need to plan some runs as it can be hard coming up with courses.

I found it interesting reading the DCM Half were people are tapering for the race this weekend while us souls are playing longer runs than the race. 18 miles for me.

Tried powerade on my long run last week instead of after and found it good. I was usually a Luc sport but there was a powerade special a few weeks back and found it nicer and better as previously i didn't like the taste of it.

I don't use a physio but more of a sports injury guy who runs himself which is benificial.

At 30 euro as well is very good value. Located in Kilkenny if thats of any use to you.

PM me and I can send on more details if interested

    Hey guys,

this conversation is good timing for me, think i have just gotten my first injury this session :(:(

Had what I thought was a knot in my calf during my LSR on Sat. Felt it pretty much most of the way through without it really bothering me. Then it was a bit sore the last couple of days but agin nothing major. Was trying to massage it out with a golf ball (don't have a stick!)

Just back from my 5-miler today. Again I could feel it the whole way through but nothing more than a bit of an ache until the last half mile or so when it started to hurt. Even making me limp a bit now. Worried that its a calf strain or muscle tear or something now.

Right in the upper middle of my calf. Anyone ever had this before? And can anyone recommend a good sports physio in either City Centre or Dublin Southside (Blackrock/Cabinteely way preferably). Thanks.

Just looking at National Half Marathon results, a lad i have been beating easily all year at races ran 1.30.xx in it. I COULD have ran something near the same if i was fit. I emphasize the word COULD now. Would have been a big PB to. Stupid injury.
