Since I started religiously running 4 times a week (currently running 21/22 miles per week) I have been feeling really tired. Not tired legs, more 'nodding off in front of the tv at 9pm' tired! Anyone else suffer from this? Any tips on how I can stay awake beyond 10pm!!!

I do nearly all runs in morning before work, so my problem was more like nodding off at 9am after coming back from a run. After a while the body got used to the extra effort. It might have different ideas again once I get stuck into these long runs.

Yeah slightly worried about the heat, I do not do well in hot weather. An experienced runner tells me I will acclimatise :)

Well there's NO WAY it'll be this hot at the end of October so not expecting sunburn to be such a problem on race day!
I'm trying to do my runs early at the moment, before it gets too hot, & before fun socialising things get in the way of all my good plans!

It was very hot and humid for the first 7 miles in DCM last year.:)

I'd love to embrace the morning runs, as i'd love the time it would free up for me in the evening, but I struggle running without having had my brekkie. Do the morning runners here have brekkie before they run or run on an empty stomach?

It's more the training over the summer months has me worried, I'm quite pale.
Or I am being very optimistic about the Irish weather :)

This is my problem, in order to get out before leaving for work, I have to get up about 6.00-6.15, if I had to get up any earlier to have brekkie, I think i'd really struggle. And then I don't want to run just after breakfast and get cramps/sick/trots :o

I find i need to have a banana and coffee first thing in order to go to loo (sorry for toilet remarks!) i get up at 4.45am on wed/thurs to get that into me before going for my run around 5.15/5.30am. On Sundays i wake up when i feel like it, usually around 7 and have the same banana and coffee plus a big water drink and 2 bikkies as i do a longer run sundays, on my last mile home i dream on my poached eggs on toast..mmmmmm. I have to leave home at 7.45am so in order to get my run done i need to get up really early. Its not for everyone and im in bed by 9pm usually...so anti social

I used to run before breakfast a lot, especially for those shorter 3/4/5 mile runs midweek.

What is the best time of the day to run? I have heard conflicting opinions on the subject.

Because different times suit different people. It depends on when you have time available, how you feel about running in the dark, how you feel about running before or after eating, if you're the kind of person who'll be too tired after work, or finds it too hard to get off the couch for an evening run. It depends on the kind of run too - I wouldn't like to try a faster run in the morning, but an easy run into work is great.

Your long runs should start around the same time the race starts, that way you can practice your morning routine and get your body used to running at that time.

I think i agree with ray, ir would be of no use confining yourself to doing a long run at race time. do it when it suits your routine and mood.

But I agree with Mr Slow:) - it's good to do your long runs at around the same time of day as your race will be. That's one reason why so many people do the long run on the weekend, so they can run between breakfast and lunch.

But don't worry if you can't always manage that, and for the rest of your runs go with what suits you.

Looks like I dont agree with you then Ray ;) or mr slow for that matter cause many people I know run early cause they're morning people or have stuff to do in the afternoon/evening and like to get the run out of the way.

Might just start the marathon at 6:00 am then. Had i done that last year would still have had a few kenyans pass me out near the end!

On a more positive note a new 5k best time of 26:21 in a time trial this morning. Reckon could get that under 25 mins before the year is out.

There's a great 5km in Celbridge in late July, very fast.

    Phew!

Just back from a hot 5 miles around Cabinteely Park. It was my first time running there so I wasn't sure what to expect. When I'm doing any run over about 3 miles, I prefer to go to a bigger park and do fewer laps. I went to Deer Park a few weeks ago to do a 4.5 mile run and found it tough going at times. I thought Cabinteely Park might have been flatter but it was just as hilly, if not more so. By the time my Garmin got a signal and was ready I was on the long slow hilly part so just started running and my legs felt incredibly slow. I kept going anyway and once I got to the downhill or flat bits, it was grand.

Felt pretty good, although again the hilly parts were tough and I often felt like my legs were tied together I was that slow. Got it done anyway without stopping once. I wasn't so concerned with the time, just wanted to make sure I did the distance.

I went to see Kip Keino talk last night in Santry and he said one of the reasons people get injured is they don't warm-up enough. He said his warm-up used to be about 5 miles! :) I was just thinking that as I was running around. I don't know if I could imagine doing that 5 miles there now and that just being the warm-up!

2 or 3 miles is plenty to get the blood flowing. By the end of August 5 miles will feel like a short trot for you.

I was only stating that I agreed with Rays initial opinion. I appreciate the fact that you have a collective experience of marathon running, that is why i have joined the thread

I also appreciate the fact that Im entitled to my opinion and that this forum is not a clique.

Ran the Clare-Burren Half Marathon today, the heat made it tough in spots, 1.53.15 in the end for 41st place. Did not feel stressed at that time and suppose i could have broken 1.50 if i pushed, but no point in that heat. Hopefully can run sub 1.40 on flat later in the year. Beautiful scenery in the race, well marshalled and plenty of water stations on the route.
