Eh what your thread got to do with Triathlons/Duathlons or Adventure racing.....................wrong forum me thinks.

And to answer your question you have to do that 8k another 4 times and a 2k more. You'd need to be starting a 16 week programme now or should even have it started.

Ask to have a mod move this the running area:)

    Hello all,

Last night I completed an 8km race and finished it within 40mins. This is my first race in preparation of the Dublin marathon this year.

I did this race as a benchmark to see how I was fitness wise and how to estimate my target time for the Dublin Marathon.

Base on this is there a website link or any advice on my training and target time for the Dublin marathon. Originally I was going for a sub 4hr marathon but based on my race last night I was thinking of adjusting this target...

    Thank you in advance.

have a look at the hal higdon pages (links at the start of this thread), and younganne and other mods here can help with more details. they've given some great advice so far.

    welcome to the madness

First post....long time lurker. I have signed up for the DCM and hope to meet some training friends as well as support group on here. I have a good running base of one year. Running 4 times a week 3 x 5k and 1 x 10k at weekend. Ive completed a few 10k races and best time is 57m. So I like to think im slow but steady;). I also do spinning and kettle bells once a week as well as a long walk on my cross-training day. Healthy weight and diet. Age 42. Im starting the novice training plan on the 25th and hope to join in for some weekend long runs and gain some advice and support from members here.......Best of luck to all in training and hope I can be of help as well.......

So is everyone running nearly 20 miles a week already?

  • Registered Users Posts: 32 sheba 121

Im not at the 20 miles yet but close to it. I have done 20 miles plus a week earlier in the year.......I just had too many things on over the last 4 weeks to up the miles. Mostly walking events. Coast is all clear now for the training.....bring it on:)

As long as you and I can start with 3x3x3x6 on the first week of Hal's plan next week and keep going from there then you've no bother and that goes for me as well!

Just coming back from a long lay off with knee injury. Started doing 5km now and starting my first 4th day continuous run. Knee is holding up fine and would love to come back. Relative newbie, I did the race series for the first time last year. My stats:

    10km Pheonix Park 42.42

    5 m race series 36.14

    10 m race series 72.12

    Half marathon race series 1:49.12

    Dublin marathon 4:36.22

I'm not at 20 miles a week yet. My last 7 weeks have been:

    16.6m, 3m (only 1 run as I was sick!), 15m, 16m, 16m, 15m, 16.5m (missed 1 run).

Remember the Fr Ted episode where Dick Byrne got all his scrabble tiles to read STUPID PRIEST CANT SAY MASS, well my scrabble tiles would read STUPID FATTY CANT RUN LEAD LEGS.
Im feeling a bit run down this week, going to take some berocca and not run till Sunday, supplement wise I take fish oils and a vitamin C every day, so maybe I need a boost? The only thing extra I had been taking was a glucosamine and chondroitin tablet as well as the oils and vit c but ran out this week, but thay are to help joints, I dont think this has any bearing on energy levels? Well Im away on holidays in a fortnight so maybe that will help!
Feeling a bit sad about crap running

The macmillan calculator is probably what you're looking for but using an 8km race result you couldn't count on the marathon time from it. If you're using the race series then as the race distance increases you'll know better as you get through the plan, I wouldn't be overly concerned with the planned finishing time at this stage in the training.

I'm sure the more experience posters can advise. I'll be aiming for a sub 40 in the 5 mile next week so I'm in a similar position.

In what direction were you thinking of adjusting the 4hr target??....

Just FYI, my first marathon was 3.58, and my times that year were

    January 5 mile - 46 minutes
    March 5k - 25 minutes
    April 10k - 54
    May 5 mile - 40 (39.59 :D)
July 5 mile - 38.30 (course was short, that's an adjusted time)
    August 10 mile - 81
    September 1/2 marathon - 1.48
September 5k - 22.40 (the day after an LSR)

If you're running the Dublin half marathon that's the best predictor of your marathon time, because it's the closest distance and the training you've done will apply to both races.

I think we’ve all been there Zooming, there are some days when it just feels like such an effort to put one foot in front of the other. I don’t really have any advice other than to let you know you’re not the only one! I always go into ‘burn out’ mode just before my hols, where I feel like one more week in work would actually kill me! Maybe that’s contributing to your tiredness.

I remember you saying earlier in the week that you ran in the morning, have you considered maybe trying the evening instead? I find it seriously difficult to run in the morning as I won’t have eaten much so I feel like I’m running on empty. Or maybe you could try changing your route, or is there someone you could run with? Sometimes I think changing it up a bit can help.

I bet you’ll feel better once you’ve been on your hols. And in the meantime, don’t feel bad about missing a run or being a bit sluggish.

I get up at 4.30am during the week to allow me to get coffee and a banana before by run at 5.30am, so I do tend to get a bit tired somedays, I work late during the week also! By the time evening comes Im wrecked!

Oh my God! No wonder you’re tired!!! I’d be mega sluggish too if I was running on just a banana. Could you try eating a small bowl of porridge or a couple of slices of toast or something a little more filling? Serious respect to you for getting up so early to jog, that is real dedication.

How long is your run? Couldn't you just eat afterwards? Better than getting up an extra hour early...
