Name favourites, you can list tracks, albums, whatever.

here's mine in no particular order, it'd be too hard to sort them.

    Tribe called quest
    Lauryn hill (solo)
    Pete Rock and C.L Smooth
    Pharcyde
    Fugees
    Gang starr
    Outkast
    Common
    Leaders of the new school.
Mos def (Solo and with blackstar)
    Beastie boys

I just gave a top ten, you don't necessarily have to name ten, i just narrowed it down a bit.

    • Tonedeff (all of QN5 but specifically Tonedeff)
    • Sage Francis (I dunno, I suppose he belongs here?)
    • KRS-One (does he belong here?)
    • Canibus (belongs?)
    • Jurassic 5
    • Jedi Mind Tricks
    • Immortal Technique (belongs?)
    • Outkast
    • Gym Class Heroes
    • De La Soul
    • Fort Minor
    • Rage Against The Machine
    • Scroobius Pip ( of him and dan la sac fame)
    • Messiah J (of Messiah J and The Expert fame)
    • Blackstar/Talib/Mos/yasiin
    • ATCQ
    • Hopsin
    • Cee-Lo
    • Beasties
    • Ganstarr
    • Fugees
    • MC Solaar (French)
    • OG Hindu Kush (Canadian)

This list is only vaguely in descending order. WTC and PE would rank high if they counted.

Wu tang don't really belong, they're more gangster rap than anything.
PE were afrocentric/militant style hip hop, not really alternative.
Tech im not sure, i honestly don't know what sub category he'd fit into.

Otherwise solid list, some artists i forgot to put in mine that i really should have.

I am not pigeon holing, the op asked for "alternative" hip-hop and I gave a very long list and had a lot of questionable people on it so as to show what exactly is "alt" hip-hop as it is as hard to categorize as back-back etc

I'd still love a definition of what alternative hip hop is as most of them acts are just hip hop to me.

Alternative Hip Hop artists/groups usually take other musical elements from different genres and fuse it together with Hip Hop.

Good examples of this would be:

Any early Rick Rubin produced/Def Jam stuff: Run DMC, Beastie Boys, LL Cool J
Dan The Automator (Handsome Boy Modelling School, Gorillaz, Deltron 3030, Dr Octagon)
The Gravediggaz, Insane Clown Posse, The Flatlinerz (Horrorcore)
    Guru's Jazzmatazz series
El-P & most Def Jux artists
    Digable Planets
    Stetsasonic
    Native Tongues
    Bodycount (Ice-T)
    Arrested Development
    De La Soul
    Atmosphere
    Jay Electronica
    Andre 3000
    MF DOOM

You are just describing hip hop :D

Hip Hop is very experimental by nature but I've listed acts that go out of their way to be experimentally and cross over into other genres and break new ground.

You can't say the likes of Jazzmatazz was straight-up Hip Hop, it's not like Guru hired a producer with a jazzy production style and it was coincidental. He went out of his way to be experimental (or alternative) and became a pioneer in the process.

You're just being ignorant, hip hop doesn't just fall into two sub categories, "Good hip hop" and "bad hip hop"

What's the point in posting if you have nothing intelligent to contribute to the thread?

I never said Jazzmatazz was straight up hip hop.

I've been into hip hop for nearly 30 years,i've DJ'ed it,produced it,loved it and hated it i've more records than i can count.i used to try pigeon hole things and categorise the music into east, west,uk etc but finally i learnt there is simply only good hip hop and bad hip hop. That's my opinion i don't expect you to share it or agree with it lol

If that's your opinion then why ask if the thread is a joke? It's universally acknowledged that there's sub categories of hip hop, you can't expect other peoples threads to adhere to your opinions.

I don't expect that at all.Doesn't stop me giving my opinion on other peoples threads :D
