How much notice to give Landlord?

I moved into apartmnet in August 2010 when the lease was up in 2011 the Landlord told us he had put the apartment up for sale so we did not sign a new Lease. We have found a new apartment now and it will be available in 4 weeks. We pay our rent monthly so is 4 weeks enough notice to give our existing landlord?

Since you didn't sign a new fixed term lease in 2011, you are now in a Part 4 tenancy. To do it by book, you need to give 42 days notice in writing since you are in the apartment between 1 and 2 years.

You can try and negotiate with the landlord for a shorter period than the 42 days. He may be agreeable if he finds someone to move in between the 4 weeks and the 6 weeks (42 days).
