For the first time ever in its history, Cavan town joins the ranks of large towns in Ireland with a population of 10,000 or greater.

Census 2011 shows that Cavan town had a population last year of 10,205, representing a growth of 2,322 since the 2006 census or a growth rate of almost 30 percent, making Cavan one of the fastest growing towns in Ireland during the 2006-2011 period.

Monaghan town, by comparison, recorded a population of 7,452 in 2011.
The largest town in Ireland in 2011 was Drogheda, with a population of 38,500.

However, County Cavan's overall population remains strongly rural in nature with only 30% residing in a settlement of 1,500 population or greater.

The other towns of over 1,500 population in County Cavan had populations in 2011 as follows:

    Ballyjamesduff 2,568
    Baileborough 2,530
    Virginia 2,282
    Cootehill 2,123

    There's also Kingscourt !

    Ballyjamesduff 2,568
    Bailieborough 2,530
    Kingscourt 2,326
    Virginia 2,282
    Cootehill 2,123

Next is Belturbet, failing to break into the 1500-plus club with 1,407 inhabitants (4 less than last time). Cootehill and Belturbet are the only towns in the county (apart from Cavan) that have town councils.

Two more towns have more than 1,000 people: Mullagh (1,137; 67% increase since last census) and Ballyconnell with 1,061.
