Waterford Hikes or Trail Runs

Hi,

Down in Waterford City with work next week and will probably have a few hours to pass on a couple of evenings.

Just wondering if anyone has any suggestions re. walks (max 3-3.5hrs) I could do or places where I could do a trail run?

I've walked most of the Knockmealdowns and they are probably a bit too far away but haven't been on the Comeraghs. Are there any of the Comeraghs that could be bagged in a 3.5hr walk?

Looking at the OSI's online maps, I can't see any hills close to the city that would be good for a trail run..

For hiking, was up the Comeraghs myself a few months back. Really lovely hike, very different to the usual straight range of hills, more like a plateau with a few summits and some impressive drops and sights. Was brought on an extended trek around a lot of it, understand that the Coomshingaun Circuit and the Mahon Falls are the usual treks.

As for trail running, raised this query too before and was told that there are a number of trails in Portlaw woods.

For a trail run, id recommend Slievenamon, about 20 mins outside City.

Commeraghs are beasutiful, Galtees about an hour away as are the Knockmealdowns.

A run on the sandhills in Tramore is popular locally too.

Circuit of Cumshingaun looks great. Do you know the name of the top it takes in? Looks doable in 3-3.5 hrs.

Didn't think Slievenamon was that close to the City. Hiked it before on a pretty rough day with no visibility so wouldn't mind a walk or run up if the weather is more favourable.

the coumshingaun takes you up to the top of the cliffs overlooking the lake. The Actual summit, Fauscoum (792m) is further west across the flat comeragh plateau, and is marked by a stone carn.

Coumshingaun is considered the jewel in the crown as far as Comeragh coums are concerned. All of them are well worth visiting though. Comeragh gullies are an experience in themselves!

Spot height 792 is the unnamed highest point in the Comeraghs. It's a brief detour if you're doing the Coumshingaun horseshoe. Nice to say you've done it but compared to the steep sided coums and their cliffs it's a bit of an anti-climax.

Bear in mind there is a slight risk of car break in, probably less than most places, but it is real nonetheless. I've been ok on any night hike I've done this winter (and the past twenty!) but I know two people that have had their cars broken into. There was also a report in the local rag of three cars being broken into there about 4 weeks ago.
