I bought a Nvidea 8800 GTX for 40 euro second hand and I can play modern games on high settings. I played Skyrim, no problems at all. I just finished Alan Wake on High settings and it looked amazing. So getting a decent card need not break the bank. I have yet to encounter a game that I can't play with the card.

Just make sure your PC has the right PSU (power supply unit) connections for the card your buying and that the graphics card will fit in your case.

try witcher 2 and BF3. Witcher 2 was the reason i had to drop my 8800gt and get 6870. what resolution you play btw?

OP, this would do the trick:

    http://www.dabs.ie/products/sapphire-technology-ati-radeon-7850-860mhz-2gb-pci-express-3-0-hdmi-80T9.html?q=7850&src=16

    overclocks nicely too.

I refuse to play Witcher 2 until I get a second 7970 just so I can play it maxed out on 3 screens. One 7970 barely maxes it on one. I have it installed since relase btw.
If I was you I would get a 6870, sell your power supply and out of the change get a better one unless its a very high quality one.

turn off that shiety ubersampling, i personally dont see any difference with it on, but it makes my gtx680 run like a dog on 1080p

That's the way I buy hardware as well.

6870 on pixmania for 114 euro

    http://www.pixmania.ie/ie/uk/11391849/art/amd/radeon-hd-6870-1-gb-gddr5.html

I normally hate when people say wait, but I do think there will be serious powerful cards coming in about 12 -18 months from now.

Around the time the next gen consoles come.

If you buy that card for 114 euro, sell it on adverts in a year or two for 50 euro, doesn't work out much then.

    I don't think the 7850 is worth twice of a 6870.

It's faster but not 100% faster.

Top left on the second image it says direct x 9, unless I'm just seeing things.

do you have a slide of 6870 and 7850 slide of bf3 in 1080p. i am prety sure 7850 will show way better results just because of the vram.

6870 is a very very good bang for your money card. I learned few months ago that you dont look in for value when you going higher up with cards. you will newer get twice of your performance then mid range value card.

that 6870 will work out 125eu with delivery and it is stock cooler, so i would not call it that big of a bargain, when you can get nice reference design for 20eu more.

7850 on dabs with great cooler turns out 215eu with free delivery, so its not really double the price. then again 7850 has way better overclocking abilities then stock 6870.

i love 6870 and i do own in my second pc, but at this stage i would go for 7850 as it is over all better bundle. later on buying second 7850 will put you in to very nice position, wheres 2x6870 will bounce at each other with limited vram.

2 x rule sounds great in theory but never really works, especially 200 euro cards.

    2 x 7850 will be slower than a single mid range card in 12 - 18 months.

Just like 2 x 6870 sounded great 12 months ago.

6870 for 125 euro is much better bang for buck than a 7850 for 215 euro.

OP would need a new psu as well and probably a new mobo as well for crossfire.

Thing is, the 7850 can be overclocked to something like stock 7950 levels, so two 7950s sounds good.

6870x2 sounded great and still sounds good.

7850 can overclock like crazy, its a great card for 200eu. my stock gtx 680 got unigen 3.0 1850 and some fellas OCed 7850 got 1555 score on same unigen settings. that is really impresive.

2xsetups are not just great in theory, they are good and getting better as we start to see 90-100% scaling. when it started it was bad, but it went a long way from there. there is way more doom and gloom talk, then it should be in reality.

Your PSU is quite light on juice at 450w. A lot of cards are going to stretch it.

Your right he should get the 7850.

I have never liked sli/crossfire, had 2 x 8800gtx before and never warmed to it even though they were fast.

Sold them both over a year ago for 90 euro for the two and got a used 6850 on dabs for 130.

    Much prefer the single card.
