UPC: Intermittent issues from accessing my personal domain.

    Hi Folks,

I have a very strange problem and UPC have proved useless in trying to solve it so hoping someone can help me here.

Since February I have an intermittent problem of being able to access my own personal domain hosted by Bluehost. I can't reach it via http, ftp or IMAP from my UPC connection. This is true for all machines I have hanging off my UPC router - Mac's, Windows, iPhones & iPads, wired or wireless. The domain is up and running during this time as I can access it from 3G, other locations and can also confirm it's up using various websites to check.

It started in Feb when it was down for about 5 days then came back, again in March for 4 days and now twice this month still waiting for it to return to normal at the moment. Nothing changes on my side though, whether it is up or down. My IP Address does not change. I have tried using Google's public DNS address in case UPC's were causing an issue but that did not help.

I know this is a UPC issue but they are doing nothing. They have tried to tell me on several occasions it is my domain host. It seems impossible to get past a Level 1 tech and get to speak directly to a Network specialist.

I registered a complaint and got to speak to a very bored rep, and the best that came out of that was to replace my router. This was a pointless exercise as it has nothing to do with my end. And to prove that point my access to the domain dropped off again 1 day after the replacement.

I sent on a note to the complaints rep including all the usual pings, traceroutes, ifconfig they ask for by default along with screengrabs from testing websites that show the domain is active and it is just me with the problem, and all I get is they are sending it on to the correct department. That was 48hours ago and nothing.

I am trying to run a business from this website so having to respond to emails via 3G on my iPad, or write blog posts from my iPad is a PIA.

Any idea's what to do next - comreg?

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Though tbh I'd also have to side with UPC here, it does sound like a webhost issue or routing issue with the host, changing dns should have fixed pretty much any problem you are having accessing the domain via http, ftp etc.

Even in a remote side of things it is somehow upc's fault its a single user issue with ONE domain and as such would be very very very very low priority for them to resolve.

You know what you could try... to be sure to be sure :) ... Try accessing the website from someone elses upc connection whenever you can't access it.

Thats why I did it. And the fact that my domain is accessible by others while it is down for me.

That may be but I'm that one user with that one domain!

I have done and they have no issue accessing my domain. That's why I think it is down to my IP Range. The one time I did manage to speak to an L2 back in Feb he told me that they had a certain IP range that has experiancing issues access some domains.

It's starting to sound like it's a problem on your end or your web hosts end rather than upcs end.

Have you tried plugging out your UPC box, leaving it off for a while and plugging it in again to see if it gets a new public ip address?

What exact steps have you taken as well?

You haven't actually set a static ip address on the router, have you?

Why would you think it sounds like an issue on my or my hosts end? UPC just replaced my router with their top of the range one and re-ran the cable to my house.

No I have not tried to set up a static IP Address.

I just posted on an older thread about this problem (because I didn't see this one!). I guess that there may be a number of websites that UPC customers can't get to, and the the problem isn't their computer or their modem. It looks like a routing issue. The other thread indicated that certain UPC customers on specific subnets have routing problems to certain domains.

The only way to get somewhere with this issue is:
    1. Visit the site and post whether or not it worked.
    2. Run a tracert / traceroute to the site and post the results
    3. Post your IP (or subnet of you're paranoid)

If somebody is then willing to contact UPC to raise the issue and email them the data collected in this thread, they'll have something to work with. (I don't mind doing this, as I've already contacted them about my wife's website)

If you have the thomson modem try turning off the firewall and see if it helps, obviously not something you want to leave off, but see if its the issue
