Is this Vertonghen character any good? He's playing in a **** league isn't he?

He's in a poor league but he was captain of Ajax and Dutch footballer of the year. Scored 8 goals in 31 league games last season too!

Hamburg finished in 15th place last season,1 place above relegation. They've been in decline over the past few seasons and it's there 125th anniversary this year so their looking for a marquee signing, although VDV played there before and has stated he would love to go back again i dont think it will be this season plus they simply cant afford him.

I think Adebayor might be back for 8m.

^^^ Yeah, alot of talk that we might get Ade on the cheap as citeh look to offload before buying RVP or similar.

I wonder if we will make a move for Tevez?

The actual transfer fee isn't really our biggest concern with Adebayor, the real stumbling block is how we compensate him for the fact that he is walking away from his humongous salary with City.

I don't like the idea of giving him a 5m signing on fee but it might be the only way.

What about J.S. Park off to QPR for £2m

I suppose we dont need to strenghten that part of the team but I always rated him a players and he has a lot of experience. His stamina/engine would suits AVB pressing style of play but I couldnt see him dislodging any of the current starting XI

Park was dreadful this season, everyone in the United superthread are delighted they're getting £2m for him.

Really? He plays such a bit-part these days I hadn't noticed.

Daily Fail also carrying the story that Chelsea have captured Oscar for £25m, they're the only paper doing so however, no one in Brazil have reported anything similar so it could be a load of pony.

Guardian online has it too, so probably there is some truth in it. Apparently van persie can now join citeh once Adebayor joins us. Will a massive signing fee and low weekly wage be an incentive for Adeb? That's my fear when buying a guy who goes hot and cold like he does

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,625 ✭✭✭flyswatter

He's not worth the title of being the best paid player at the club imo.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,290 ✭✭✭Leinstersqspur

17 goals and 11 assists last season suggests he's worth it.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,913 ✭✭✭Ormus

Its definitely a risk that his low wages will de-motivate him but I think he is worth the risk. Lets just think of it as a 10m transfer fee and regular wages.

There are very few strikers who are capable of playing up front on their own at this level.

Oscars agent has supposedly said that Chelsea have come in with a bid for him which he is more likely to accept for more exposure according to SSN!

Dont get me wrong, I think he should be at the club but not the best paid. Someone like Bale deserves that.

L'Equipe claim that Hugo Lloris has started contract talks with Tottenham.

    Hope this is true.

Massive signing if true, no doubt it'll take him a while to adapt to the English game but he should go on to be a great keeper for us.

    Moutinho and Hulk. Just imagine.

Now that we have the much needed CB we needed surely the focus needs to switch to 2 new strikers. (and that does NOT include Ade).

No point having the best midfield in the EPL if we cant put the ball in the net.

Signing the next big thing from South America is one thing (risky) but I think its time for a marque signing. Either someone with a proven record in the EPL or a top player from the italian/Spainish or German league...

With Ade, i think we only need the one world class striker. I'd be happier with 1 striker and Lloris.

  • Registered Users Posts: 582 ✭✭✭RoboClam

Yeah in fairness Ade was probably our best player last season. I think he should fit into AVB's system nicely too. He was mostly playing as a lone striker last season which arguably didn't give him the opportunity to score as much as he should have.

The problem with signing a marquee striker is that AVB won't play two up front so, with Ade and Defoe there, another striker might only go to upset the apple cart.

I think we should be looking for a more adaptable winger/striker type. Someone who can rotate with Bale and Lennon, but could also play up front if needed. Loic Remy seems to be a player in that mould, but looks to be sticking with Marseille. Another option would be Giuseppi Rossi, now that Villareal have been relegated - though his recovery from a bad injury is still ongoing. I also very much like Lisandro Lopez of Lyon - he has a good goal scoring record in Argentina, Portugal and France - and also plays on the wing.

Any other suggestions of players of this type?

Yeah good shout, although a striker who is strong enough to play up front on his own in Ade's absence and yet also fast and nimble enough to fill in on either wing for Bale or Lennon, probably doesn't exist. Hulk maybe? We're hardly gonna smash our transfer record for a sub.

I think we might be best off letting Defoe go to Sunderland or Villa or wherever, and sign Demba Ba and Junior Hoilett. Ba would be good backup for Ade and Hoilett would be good backup for Bale/Lennon, and could fill in up front in an emergency. Or maybe Moussa Dembele, if we could get him.

I can definetly see Bale playing up front if Ade gets injured and playing someone like Townsend or Carroll on the wing for a match or two but you wouldn't want it to be for very long.
