Dude, you are wrong, Modric plays the same style as Alonso, Xavi etc.... Not many english teams have a player like him i.e. lying deep, recycling the ball, spread passes, looking for space... Thats why clubs want him...

Vdv is the attacking midfielder/forward playing similar to the players you mentioned.

If your convinced our team played better without Luka in it I think you could be in The Nile!

haha. I may well be in denial.
Wouldn't compare him to Alonso though. His range of passing is far superior to Ratboys. We have an excellent passer at Spurs but unfortunately he seems to be on his way to Stoke.

Deep lying play maker? I thought that was just a position/role made up by the football manager game series :D

But seriously I recall also reading a link or a blog (or similar) before that provided stats on our results with/without Modric and they were marginally better without him.

Thudd is a nice long passer, but I don't ever remember him playing a through ball. I'm sure he must have, but I just don't remember.

He had 16 assists in the 5 seasons before last season. Thats 3 per season.

Modric has 21 assists in the last 4 seasons.

Not sure what your point here is. Modric has more assists than Hudd?
Grand. For 40m I would expect more than 5 assists a season.

Maybe after a few months watching the ball fly over his head at Stoke Thudd may come back fitter and help us.

Just saw this on the indo :

When asked whether he would sign another striker to join Jermain Defoe and Harry Kane, Villas-Boas told a press conference : "I don't think so. With Adebayor, Defoe and Kane coming through, I think I have enough options."

He added: "Damiao is obviously a fantastic player but he is not our prospect at the moment because we are closed with what we are trying to do on the striker situation."

Bull or is that it- no more strikers?

Smoke and mirrors, Levy loves it....

Believe it or not, in season 2009/2010 when we qualified for CL Luka missed two and a half months and was also deployed on the left a lot. This goes to show that we can live ans succeed without him.

From his body language I get the feeling we are going hard for Willian, AVB did not wish to go into it any deeper as it would be disrespectful to Shaktar...

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,334 ✭✭✭positivenote

personally, i cant see us signing another striker as if AVB thinks Harry Kane is good enough then no doubt he is. We definately need a replacement for luka as he will be very difficult to replace, players like him are a very rare breed and thats why clubs like Madrid are trying to get him. The issue that is not being addressed that is the most worrying for me is the keeper situation... Friedal is not good enough. If we are saying that Daws isnt up to the standard we now expect, this is a standard that should be all over the pitch, in every position. Cudicini was an average keeper at chelsea and since his injury is not even that. Gomes may get another chance, i dont know, but to be a great team we need a great keeper.

So at the minute what's the priority? For me its gotta be a proven striker > Deep lying playmaker  > A young left back with promise.

I can see why we didn't get Fryers; united were after 6m for him!? I thought that Kyle Naughton was a right back by the way?

As for AVB saying we aren't signing another striker.. bollocks! We have one proven striker that can play on his own up front... we'd better get someone that can play in a 4-5-1. Is Saha still available? :P

  • Registered Users Posts: 9,153 ✭✭✭everdead.ie

Fryers must be a massive spurs fan?
Why else would he go to standard for two years just so we can buy him?

I'd agree with the first 2, but we have Vertonghen, Naughton and Rose who can all play left back.

It's criminal if we don't get another striker.

am I alone in my sentiments regarding our keeper? how anyone can not see it as a concern is beyond me... Friedal was reliable enough as a stop gap for a season while we found someone who could establish themselves as our No. 1 for many seasons...

    You're not alone!

I do think it's something we need quite urgently, would love if we got Stekelenburg, not sure if there is anything in those rumours.

Another striker is more of a priority for me though. Friedel can go one more season at a push.

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,946 ✭✭✭SuprSi

It would be great to get a keeper with Robbo's distribution skills. Brad/Gomes/Carlo can't kick a ball like he did and it was obvious against Newcastle that it's not one of Brad's strengths.

I don't know how good Lloris or Ceasar are in this respect though.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,375 ✭✭✭Antisocialiser

I think Brad will be fine for another year... here's hoping anyway.

What I meant was I would really like to see someone pushing Benny for his place, rather than being an option if he became injured. Naughton is a RB afaik, Rose is a LM and as for Jan, I ain't seen him but I thought he was predominantly a CB.

I'd like to see a left sided Kyle Walker but I take your point. We simply must sign a striker and a creative midfielder... Cmon Moutinho!

personally i would love to see Ceasar at the club, with his size, ability and experience he would be perfect for the PL.

I think Brad will be fine for another year and if he struggles with injury ( i doubt it doubt as the guy holds the record for consecutive appearances in the league), we always have Carlo as backup.
We still need another striker. Bit worried with AVBs press conference yesterday when he said he was happy with Ade, Defoe and Kane as his strikforce. If we only play owith one up top do we actually need more strikers or will he fill the team with creative attacking midfielders?
I see the Modric deal still has to be finalised. Kaka was not included in the panel for Real V Barca last night. Any chance Levy will try to include Kaka as part of the Modric deal? On loan perhaps?

No chance. Kaka is on the big bucks. We don't pay the big bucks. Plus Kaka would have no interest in playing for us.

ah you never know. They want Modric, we need a creative midfielder, they want to get rid of Kaka, we have Levy in our corner .........
True we don't pay the big bucks but he is the wrong side of 30, i don't see too many of the top clubs clambering over themselevs to get his signature, he might like a visit to London......

I think thats AVB trying to learn from his chelsea mistakes.

Even if we are trying to sign another striker hes said the right thing in my view. If he had said we were short of quality there and we didnt sign anyone else then hed be left with a stroppy JD (which is only marginally worse than regular JD:pac:).

If another striker doesnt materialise then at least his already shown his confidence in the ones we do have, which makes the best of a bad situation

This is a good point. He is 30 and clearly out of favour with Mourinho! I wonder how many years are left on his current contract. He really isn't going to attract a big transfer fee at his age; I'd hazard a guess and say he will finish his playing days at one of the "lesser" clubs, much like Raul did at Schalke.

If they get Modders, a loan will be an attractive option for both player and club unless they get some "new monies" looking for a marquee signing and just spunking cash all over the shop.

If anyone can wrangle RM into offering Kaka on loan to sweeten the modric deal, then its Levy.

It isn't inconcievable that RM would continue to pay a good part of his wages while he is on loan much the same way as city did with Ade...
At least Kaka will be playing regularily which will increase their chances of opening him up to the market.

Just looking at the ridiculousness of that last post. Not a hope in hell we'll ever sign him.

Daws and Hudd deals have fallen through.

Kaka isn't really a Modric type player, not a central midfielder who controls the play from midfield, more VDVish with more dribbling skill.
