Selling a 31 year old Defoe for 8 million (10 was quoted in the summer) to bring in a 26 year old Shane Long for 2million (reportedly) makes a heap of sense.

Long is a much better and more well rounded player than Defoe. Defoe has one trick, which everyone and his gran is aware of, and absolutely no hold up play. Long can link up well playing as a one up top and scores goals regularly for a team with a gack midfield.

Why aren't we going for contreao?

Yea, but despite all Defoe's faults he's a much better goal scorer than Long ever was, and probably ever will be. £2m is a fair price for him, but I don't expect him to solve any problems for other than being another option up front.

The difference is Long can make things happen for other players, Defoe can't. We lack a physical edge, long would be a good and different option to what we have at the moment.

Yeah Defoe misses a lot of shots where Long would have passed.

Long is a work horse, but he has speed and a good physical presence. I wouldn't expect too many goals from him in a season but he would be a useful squad player. Good in the air too.

I agree, I think Long could work very well. He offers something completely different to Defoe and any of our other strikers.

Maybe, but his goal and assist stats leave a lot to be desired. I know stats by themselves aren't very useful, but I've never been majorly impressed by Long, I think he's found his level at WB, but having said that £2m is a very fair price and I certainly wouldn't oppose the move.

His stats btw for his last 3 seasons in the PL with WB:

    80 appearances
    17 goals
    6 assists

Defoe in the same time period:
    71 appearances
    22 goals
    4 assists

All in all, I think it's a good deal. £4m plus a younger player, and one that is perhaps not as infuriating as Defoe:pac:

I agree Long's stats are not great but I actually believe he has another level in him.

Ah lads yee cant be serious. Spurs can do a lot better than Long. If we are gona add it should only be quality. We have a big enough squad. Do we really need a mediocre player like this?

This is key. They are Long's stats with West Brom. While in the same period Defoe had Modric, Bale and VDV behind him.

No offence to Brunt et al.

Cmon off it we'll short at least 2 attackers (assuming Defoe is off). Realistcally we're not going to get top drawer quality in during the Janaury window so an experienced EPL player Long could definetly plug a gap in the squad.

Some players are better being the small fish in a big pond. Berbatov flopped a bit at United, despite having the players he had behind him. Players that have the talent generally step up when they move up, remain to be seen if Long has that talent.
But I've said it before and I'll say it again, if we sell Defoe for £6m and get Long in for £2m I'd be satisfied.

Almost half of Defoe's appearances came off the bench (30 off the bench), whereas only Long came off the bench only 22 times. I've never been Defoe's biggest fan but I think it's fair to say he's better than Long, but not £4m worth. Long does indeed have more to his game, but overall Defoe trumps him.

Very poor example for the point you're making. Berba scored most his Premier league goals with United, including a Premier League Golden Boot Award in 2010-2011.

His Premier League goals to game ratio was best at United, then us and then Fulham.

Considering who each player's team mates have been over the last 3 seasons, long seems a lot better than defoe according to those stats.

Cant wait to get him, reminds me of Marco Van Basten. He's that final piece of class we have been waiting for to gel this team.

Know you are taking the piss but he would'nt be on the team as such, he would be used as a sub. We are not going to sign a top class striker because we already have two of them playing at the moment. I believe he will be a direct replacement for Defoe if this actually happens. In a way I would be delighted to have an Irish international at Spurs again.

No offence kingdomyid I don't want a mediocre striker, even if he has a green jersey.

We have a top class striker that hasn't started to score from open play ( I believe he will soon but I could be wrong) and Another striker who can be top class when he's in the mood. I don't believe its impossible to sign decent striker in January. If not use the young lads for back up.

Nice of Harry to tout our best centre half to Man City for £40m. Classy.

I don't mind that too much. He's right, Verts would be perfect for City, or for most teams in the league. I don't have any problem with him mentioning our players as candidates for other teams, where I think he crossed the line is in mentioning how much he could cost - you don't have a clue about that Harry so keep your nose out of it.

As for Lamela, I can't see it happening. It would be a sign of a massive failure on Baldini's part as it would be admitting he was too young/not ready to move to the PL. He needs game time in the PL in preparation for next season as he's unlikely to have an impact this one.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,290 ✭✭✭Leinstersqspur

Sherwood is quoted saying Lamela is injured and they need to build him up before bringing him back. I don't buy it, I reckon he's going out on loan to salvage his WC spot.

Lot of rumours of Salah perhaps going to Liverpool, great acquisition and would light up the Premiership.

Apparently, Salah is quoted as saying he would never shake hands with a Jew. So I don't think we've missed out there.
