CT scan tomorrow morning, have to head to Mater A&E at 8am and then wait until seen.

If it isn't this then thats pretty him bang out of ideas.

    Chest x-ray : clear
    Pulmonary function tests : clear
    ECG : clear
Test for pulmonary emboli : clear

So the obvious is ruled out but yet I get out of breath talking. WTF is going on.

Any allergies that might cause an asthma-like tightening of the airways?
Pollen counts are very high at the moment, though recent rainfall will knock it back a bit.

No allergies, no history of hayfever but took antihistamines for an age in case.

    Desperate for ideas.

Not stressed about anything (bar this now) so would rule out psychosomatic causes.

Only other thing I can think if is maybe an intercostal muscle strain - but no pain.

When will you have the results from the CT to rule out a clot?

Seemingly the presence of a blood clot somewhere in the body can be determined by a blood test. They do that before the CT scan and if its negative then no need for the scan. It was negative.

Basically bar not being able to breathe there appears to be nothing wrong with me.

Glenda now doesn't want me to do Roth. Go yes, do no.

I assume you've been seeing a pulmonologist? If not, then you need to.

GP at the minute, being referred on to someone now.

Would just like an all clear for Roth.

Good! GPs are the starting point, but you need someone who specializes in lungs (or heart?).

    Exactly what GP said.

All the really sinister common things are ruled out.

    ECG said heart fine.

Who the fvck knows, who the fvck knows. (Peter probably :) )

    What does your power-meter say?

sorry couldn't resist it. Hope it gets sorted for you before Roth

Power meter was one of the signs something was up.

Even fat and unfit I should be able to ride at < 180 watts without crossing aerobic threshold heart rate. I was not.

heart rate, perceived effort and the absolute numbers of a power meter. Three great metrics.

Although being fair its the not being about to talk properly thats the most obvious.......

Right - I've done literally nothing in the guts of a week. My breathing is still fvkced and Glenda does not want me to do Roth. She says go and be Tango and JBs b1tch but not race.

The doctor rang today, and I am paraphrasing, "no fvcking clue whats wrong with you. Its not allergies and its not going to kill you so continue as you will and if it doesn't clear soon i'll refer you to a consultant."

I am interpreting this as "go on the lash in Manchester for the Stone Roses, get pissed on the Sunday coming home and then decide about Roth on Monday. But if you do do Roth then you are fvcked really so your race plan should be WW2 Japanese style".

    Suck it and see...........

Well...in my very humble opinion.....if you fvcking can't breathe and you fvcking can't talk then you fvcking aren't fixed and you fvcking need to go see a fvcking specialist to figure out what the fvck is going on. Unless you like not fvcking being able to fvcking breathe....then that's a fvcking different story. In that case, you might really enjoy being Tango and JB's b1tch. You may have found your lot in life. ;)

Only catching up on this now. Any chance of your GP referring you to a respiratory specialist? A resp consultant would have given you a CT no matter what the blood tests said.

Hey, this is Tunney's log so I figured when in Rome..... ;)

Seriously, was just trying to get Tunney's attention so he will go see a specialist. Unless, JB, being your b1tch has some super-awesome perks to it. :D

Long time lurker on boards. I've followed your log and read some of your comments in other logs/threads. If you are as bad as you say you are I can't understand why you are contemplating doing Roth. What have you to gain? Why compete without the training and while in poor health? Makes no rational sense

She's f*cking right though. GP's in this sh*thole and their ''I don't know whats wrong with you and I don't care enough to investigate further. So just deal with it and stop moaning." attitude is f*cking pathetic. If they don't know whats wrong they should be referring him to someone who might.

I can talk, I just need to pause more often to get my breathe :)
I can breathe, just not as freely as usual.

yes, GP will refer me to a respiratory specialist. I would have felt better with the CT.

I've every intention of seeing one. I have a relative that is a consultant (albeit in a very different field) and going to see what he would suggest to expedite matters.

Why am I contemplating? A good question. If I am better I race. If not I don't. However I have to plan for the assumption that I am. What do I have to gain - nothing. Nothing at all. I would never be competing this year just having a laugh. A laugh with a tight restricted chest is not what I want. If I am not breathing freely I will not start. That being said I am still going and I will do the driving, the bike assembly and all the other stressful things to help the lads.

To be fair this GP isn't bad. I will get referred, I will get to the bottom of it.

Left my Zipp disc into Cycle superstore for bearing repair. Came back in worse condition than it went in. Fantastic.

Notwithstanding all the drama, the very best of luck, tunney...

Despite being the "sick man" of Boards, I've no doubt you'll be chasing JB's pint-sized a$$ around Roth for most of the day.

    Enjoy!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,304 ✭✭✭Chartsengrafs

+1. If you race, have a good one, if not sure have a good one anyway. Things can only get better from here.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,584 ✭✭✭✭tunney

    Cheers all.

Onto Base2Race to see can they save the day with the bearings. If they can't I have an 808 for the back but would prefer a disc or a wheel cover.

On the doctors - I was given the name of a GP that deals with athletes as his bread and butter and I'm going to see can I go to him and get the tests and similar interpreted not using a sedentary person as the baseline.

My chest is not fantastic but it is improving and I think the odds of taking part are increasing.

Time to nut up Tunney ;)

Hopefully this is all just smoke and you have a cracking race. Have had my fair share of consultants scratching their heads over the last while myself - you'd think for €100/5 min visit they'd at least be capable of randomly selecting another way of saying 'fvcked if I know whats wrong with you'.

Enjoy the trip away whichever way it pans out - and sure, you probably won't need all your lung capacity to pace the wee lad.

Best of luck at the weekend.

IIRC from a previous report you are prone to it so wondering at what stage before the race will the hissy fit come? :D
