Just realised earlier that I have a burst shock. Hit a massive pothole on saturday that I couldn't avoid. The roads really sicken my arse in this country!!!

Following up on the smell crisis in the 406, I decided to leave the drivers window and sunroof open all day while I went to visit relatives in Fermanagh. Also left this in the car:

    B80EWY.jpg

I shít you not, the smell has diminished :D now its not gone but it's a lot less pungent and not so in your face woft anymore. Bearing in mind I've been leaving the windows open everyday for the past week and it would not go!!! Leaving it in the car overnight to see if it rids totally or reduces the stench even more

Edit: Will be trying bread soda and onions tomorrow too :)

Think I've finally decided the GTI needs a remap. After 3 months of getting a little thrill every time I planted the throttle, this morning I felt the tiniest hint of "meh" inside me when I pulled off. It doesn't feel slow, it just doesn't feel thrill me fast anymore. An extra 50BHP should sort that though :D

    do it!

    Quick question.

What would you do to remove a sheared bolt.

    A. Ez-out extractor? (I've a set of them and have had good experience with them but I'm afraid of them breaking themselves and causing a heartache of problems)
    B. Drill out of the bolt with progressively larger bits?

There is cheaper solution take your misses car, which is slow. Drive it for few weeks, then jump back to gti. I bet it will add 200hp extra for free ;)

I drove mondeo for 3 month, then I jumped to mx amd it was a rocket!!! :D

A first, although if you break the ez out, it will be nearly impossible to drill.

B this is quite tricky, and can go wrong easily.

C try to cut a slot in the bolt, then use a screwdriver and vice grip( a bit of heating, cooling and loads of penetrating fluid will help.

D my favourite (if at all possible) weld something to the offending bolt, a nut/ smaller bolt or even a piece of steel the heat from this also helps.

    Where is the bolt?

Bolt is in the Gearbox housing.

A+B is possible. C, I don't think is possible as the bolt is recessed from the hole, I dont think that I could get something down to cut it.

D, I cannot weld and has the problems of C. :o

Try C first, even make the slot with a screwdriver and a hammer, the impacts can help seized bolts (dont go mad on it though;) ) if that doesnt work then try your ez out.

For me B is the last option coz i always make a bollix of it, so i dont do it unless i can just ream out the bolt and stick in a new bolt with a nut ( if you can just drill it out and disregard all previous advice:p)

Just ordered 6 NGK Platinum plugs, an oil filter, a cabin filter and rear pads for car. Going to service the K&N filter and make an aluminium shroud for it too hopefully. And probably paint my alloys. Busy weekend!

I'm gonna guess it's 2L, not sure if they got the Brera's engine though. That'd be sweet! :)

:o was the feeling when I saw the exhaust and found it was only a 2.2 petrol. It does sound good though and is reasonably fast. The 3.2 is sh1t. :(

EDIT: of course. *3rd partyface palm*

    petrol?

Brera and Spider came with three engines at launch. A 2.2JTS petrol engine with 185bhp, a 2.4JTDm diesel with 200 odd bhp and a 3.2V6 JTS with 260 bhp and AWD.

A 2.0 JTDm was then brought in in 2010 I think as was the 1750TBi engine.

2.4JTDm engine is the best if you're doing the miles otherwise stick to the 2.2JTS yoke. :)

Good news! Sheared bolt cam out after I drilled a hole and bet a old screwdriver in. Happy days.

Now for another question. What strength bolt should I be using for an engine/gearbox mount? There were a mixture of 8.8 and 10.9 bolts in it and I'm not sure to go will all 10.9 or 8.8. I've a sneaking suspicion that the previous owner didn't torque them up after changing the clutch and may have mixed bolts.

EDIT: I'm also short of haynes manuals. Anyone have a guideline torque figure?

    Relief beyond belief :)

10.9 is the stronger of the 2. Better explained here. I learned this myself years ago (when I was 14) wondering why the bolts holding our engine crane had stripped thread? Turns out they were 4.8

    What car?

Nay for me. It makes it stand out too much. Those civic have already a lot of design details which work great when put together, I would not change a thing.

Motor filled few days ahead, that I'm looking forward to :D

Off car shopping for a RWD this evening with a friend
Random midweek day booked off tomorrow to chill with same petrolhead friend (feeling I may know rotaries inside out by the wknd!)
I've organised a meet on another site down around wicklow friday night
Saturday the Teg will be sparkling (followed by boozin)
    Sunday C&C in Loughlinstown
Maybe spin over to the track day Monday

    It's a hard life :p

By changing 2 small triangular fog lights to a very light shade of blue?!
In fairness such a small change as that would barely be noticed by guards.

I agree with Jemmy on this. The police won't pay any attention to them. If the lads from the Civic owners forum don't get any hassle from the police in England who are really strict on everything, I can't see our police giving any hassle!
