Can I using my Linksys modem as a wireless gateway?

    How do, apologies if this comes out as jibberish, I'm not too well versed on these matters. I'm on eircom broadband at the moment and want to boost my signal so it reaches my new study where I do all my work now. Moving the eircom stamped box is a last resort really so I wanted to boost the signal as it just stops shy of the study. I have a Linksys wrt54gc

    and was wondering if I caould place that half way to boost the signal. I changed the IP address on it and changed it to a gateway instead of a router and it works fine with the ethernet cable connecting it to the eircom router but I was wondering could I get rid of the ethernet cable (don't fancy it hanging throughout my kitchen) and do it wirelessly? Thanks.

    If it can take the DD-WRT firmware then you can set it as a repeater

    Be aware, a repeater will halve the throughput of your original router which may be fine for browsing but will make file transfers painfully slow. Wireless is half duplex, it will only talk in one direction to a single device, there will be no two way traffic. Repeaters will also cause high latency.

    Because of these issues it's best to run a cable and set the Linksys as an access point on a channel well away from the existing Eircom wifi router.

    Had a feeling about that. Thanks for your reply though, now to decide how to mask an ethernet cable :(
