I believe if you're more performance oriented than it's pretty good. A friend of mine was in Maynooth and he's a Tenor and transferred to DIT for that reason.

I think you have to do some sort of entrance exam...can't remember! Lived with 3 girls doing the course last year and from what I learned, it's based on the classical music side of stuff! But I'm sure you're aware of all this!

    Best of luck

    Hey bud,

My name's Raymond, I'm actually studying the BMus course in DIT Rathmines and will be the DITSU College Officer for next year. As has been mentioned above, the course is fairly performance orientated and based around classical music genres. Contemporary/Modern Music is a different course given elsewhere in DIT.

The BMus gives you a good grounding in theory, history and composition etc in 1st and 2nd year, but the main focus will be on your first instrument (I think half the years course credit depends on your end of year performance...)

In 3rd and 4th years you choose a strand that you want to specialise in, eg Performance, Pedagogy (Teaching), Composition, Trad or Musicology and work towards that.

IMO this course is probably one of the most thorough available in Ireland and you get a good level of education across a number of areas to help you within the music industry.

The course is based in the Conservatory of Music and Drama in Rathmines and we're within 5mins of a number of amenities, inckuding Swan Swimming Pool/Gym, McDonalds, Tesco, Swan Cinema and about a dozen pubs!!

AFAIK, the RIAM, Trinity and Maynooth are all theory oriented courses, and may not be for you if you want to focus on your performance, but it's always good to do some research on them before making up your mind.

Any questions, drop me a line!!
    Cheers,
    Ray.

    Thanks Ray,
That was really helpfull and answered a lot of my questions, im just still in a turmoil between theory heavy or performance heavy courses now but DIT is looking good.

Just wondering if you can confirm the course requirements with me, pass 2 hounor subjects and 4 ordinary subjects followed by the interview? Is there any other requirements?

    Thanks again fir your help,
    Ed

    Hey,
Sorry about the delay in getting back to you - I'm rarely ever on here!!

As far as I know, that's about it. The interview process consists of a written exam and an audition/interview.

The entrance exam isn't the most difficult and when I was applying the audition/interview was the thing they made their decision on - I doubt that will have changed too much.

Hope this helps, and if you've any more questions give me a shout!!
