    Hi Boardies,

I hope I’m allowed ask this here so here goes …

My Mum has a history of breathing trouble yet has smoked practically all her life. She’s now 55 and her breathing has got so bad that she now requires oxygen at home … We’re hoping this is only a temporary measure but we all know that she’s never going to get better while she’s smoking! Anyway, I know that no matter what stop smoking aid you use, none of them are any good unless you really want to give up and I think she’s finally there !!! Thank God !!

So she’s got the leaflets from “Quit” and she’s got her patches but she’s still having the odd fag (4 yesterday – down from over 20) . I’ve heard great things about hypnotherapy for stopping smoking and this is something she’s willing to try so I said I’d look into it for her. Thing is though, I think she just has one shot at this … If she fails with the hypnotherapy and the Quit support I reckon she’ll never give them up so I’m wondering can anyone recommend a good hypnotherapist in south Dublin. She seems to be determined this time but I’m afraid if she has any slips that she’ll just go say “ah feck it”

So any tips or recommendations ??

I’ve heard great things about hypnotherapy for stopping smoking and this is something she’s willing to try so I said I’d look into it for her.

The thing is, any method is only as good as the will to quit.

Hynotherapy isnt a magic bullet. I know plenty of people who tried it and failed. I also know a couple of people who tried it and succeeded. But unless the person wants to stop its no better than any other method.

She is only torturing herself by having 4 fags a day instead of 20. Its actually easier to have none than the 4! It makes me sad to read this post. 55 is so young to be on oxygen. And still smoking. The poor woman.

There is never only one shot at it, and dont be thinking like that. I know you are very concerned for your mum and you want the right thing to happen, but she has to want to stop. You cant manage the 'ah feck it' issue - you know?

Has she spoken to her GP? Someone who has smoked heavily for so long and has breathing problems should probably talk to the GP before going for a quit - obviously I dont know the nature of her breathing problems but if there is any anxiety issues that could make the breathing worse itd be best managed by a doctor?

Has she read this forum? Its a great help to have the constant support here.

Edited to add - I checked with a friend who quit using hypnotherapy but unfortunately the particular hypnotherapist has passed on. You might find some useful info in this old thread.

its all down to your own willpower. I've been smoking for years and would love to give them up, ive tried the gum, the lozengers, patches, Alan Carr book, and my final try was hypnotherapy, i was off them for 9 hours and ended up buying a pack.
Gum, lozengers, patches and hypnotherapy can work for many people. but at the end of the day its down to your willpower.
I find, I personally lack in willpower. its all state of mind.
    Good luck with it.

As a backup plan, I'd suggest considering e-cigarettes. Because your mother has a breathing condition and requires oxygen she would definitely need to consult her doctor/specialist about them first, no one else could even begin to guess what interaction they might have.

While they probably wouldn't be quite as good for her as quitting entirely, they would be a big step in the right direction. They would be much much better for her than smoking 20 a day, and they are very very effective at getting people to stop smoking. If she can't give up some other way these could be a great last resort.

There is a Vaping and e-cigarettes forum for more info.

Thank you all for the replies !!

I've done a bit of research since and come up with a few names etc. Mum seems to be pretty positive about it too so hopefully this will work !!
