Kick ass build required - e1000 to e1500

Hi Lads,

Looking for some help in picking parts to build a new machine for transcoding and playing games.

1. What is your budget? 1000-1500

2. What will be the main purpose of the computer? Video transcoding, gaming, multi media server, host OS for VM machines

3. Do you need a copy of Windows? Yes

4. Can you use any parts from an old computer? [Hard drive/DVD Drive/Case/PSU/etc.] not a sausage

5. Do you need a monitor? Yes

6. Do you need any of these peripherals? Speakers

7. Are you willing to try overclocking? Yes

8. How can you pay? Everything

9. When are you purchasing? Within the next month


The smallest form factor possible is desired, maybe MATX?
Would like 2 full size HDs @ 2TB each plus SSD for OS
Integrated speakers with the monitor would be the preferred option.
Case must be drop dead gorgeous.

Has everything you wanted there, two 2TB hard drives, one 64Gb SSD.
Nice 23" 1080p 3D monitor with integrated speakers, the 3D is just a bonus I guess, was the best one I saw with integrated speakers.
16GB of RAM, Good GPU, MATX motherboard.

There is no case in that build, I personally don't like any of the MATX cases.
If you can go for a ATX build that would probably be a much better idea.

Also wasn't that sure about the PSU. I'm not sure if it has to be an MATX PSU, probably depends on the type of MATX case you pick.
The smaller, horizontal ones, or the bigger vertical ones that look like actual computer cases rather than a dvd player :P

How important is a small form factor? You can squeeze the build into an mITX case, but it will be more expensive:

Thanks for the prompt response.

FlyingIrishMan - I think the monitor is a tad OTT as it is a 3D TV as well. I have a Samsung 220HD at the mo and it is rotten. I think I'd go for a dedicated monitor rather than a hybrid and maybe stick a Saorview card in the box.

Deconduo - Sweet case. I'd pay the 20 yoyos and get the HardwareVersand lads to peg it together for me. Would heat be an issue
with a case that size on an over-clocked CPU? Also not much room for a Lan card or and bits and bobs I might want to add later.

As far as cases go I'm rather partial to the Thermaltake A30 which seems quite nice with the exception of the USB 3 cable routing
out the back.

Has the 7850 got the muscle for high end gaming? I'm willing to shell out the bobs for best of breed/best in class.

I'm looking for something along the lines (footprint) of an Alienware X51 with the benefit of superior parts/oomph and expandability.
Not willing to pay a fortune for a crappy Dell with a badge.

GTX 680 or HD7970 would be my preferred choice.
