Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

So, since Robdied and left us a thread that really only had one answer because it was clear-cut:

What do you answer when someone asks "Where're you from?", if you've moved a lot?

My example: born in Limerick, spent six years in Sixmilebridge, ten in Shannon, five in Limerick, and nine-ish in Cork.
Where'm I from? What's my concrete answer and what makes it so?

Why not just say, "I'm from the west/south west"?

For ****'s sake. Where's the problem?

I lived in Clondalkin for 3 years, Ballyfermot for 8 years, Kerry for 11 years, Drumcondra for 3 years and Fairview for 2 years.

I consider myself as being from Ballyfermot as that's the time of my life that shaped the person I am.

well in that case I would say the first place of residence is where you say you're from, even if it's just a month.

or just say you're from space, people love space.

People who ask where I'm from seem to care.
Some think I'll get riled if they talk about Clare or Limerick getting hammered by Cork/Kilkenny.
I left those places for a reason, so I'm bitterly delighted when they lose.

    Yeah. Helpful.

Whenever you meet anyone, they ask that stupid question, and I never know what to say.
I feel that I'm from Dublin, because I've spent the most time there.
But I lived in Wicklow for the first 2 years.
People always say that you are from wherever you feel that you are from, but that's too vague for me.
I want hard and fast rules dammit!

Okay sorry, counting by the number of years you spent in each county, you seemed to have spent more years in Dublin, so Id say your from Dublin.
but if you were born and reared in wicklow, then id say im from wicklow
where did you spend your early years, where were you reared, go to school, make your communion etc

Born and lived in Dublin for a bit, moved to cavan "FOR A BETTER LIFE".

Cavan is my home, but who gives a **** anyways, Im getting out of this country soon.

  • Registered Users Posts: 47 dublin80

Im from Dublin all my life, but for example I was born in glasnevin, christened there, went to school there, made my communion there.

we moved to Santry where i went to secondary school, made my confirmation, spent most of my years. then years later i moved out of home and my mother moved to raheny (i lived there for a year)

When people ask me where im from , i say Raheny (technically im not really), i just say that because thats where the family home is now.

but if people ask me where i was reared I say Santry cos to me thats were i was reared and went to secondary school etc

If people ask Where I live, then i tell them were I currently live.
its the way people ask the question...... I give them the answer of the way they ask......

Or phrase it whatever way you like.

If you're Irish and living abroad and someone asks you where you're from, you wouldn't say Berlin, New York etc (insert name of relevant city/state here) would you? You'd say Dublin/Cork etc. imo.
