I agree, the highlights are pretty ropey. I fail to understand any reluctance to show all film in their possession. Maybe they will now relent and show the u18 match against Scotland at FIRA.

I've never really seen the point of 19s and think any arguments for it have been further eroded by players skipping to 20s. That's resulted in the team's prestige being downgraded (slightly) and, as one poster referred to, players who should never have been there being in the team. I think the level should be set at u21s to mirror the club structure that these players are either already playing or about to play.

Thanks but let me give you an alternative viewpoint!

Leinster U18 schools had 20 players on the Irish schools and there were others who were very good and did not make the squad. The fact that 5 or 6 of those have gone to the u20s is a reflection of the huge quality that that group and those players possess. it would be unusual but its also very good i believe. Are you seriously saying that the other 14/15 or 16 players would have no representative rugby at u19 level? Of course its a development programme and it will clearly serve Leinster rugby well as these players to continue to learn and develop by being part of a squad and training over the July and August period and playing interpros in september. A lot of the players will then go back into school as they did when playing for the u18s.

I do have a degree of sympathy for the view of not having two teams but definitely one is necessary and is mirrored in the other countries.

There is a point for u19 as for those still in school.
Would Nick Timoney and Fergal Cleary be good enough for u20s? Yes they would.
Would James Ryan start for u20s? Yes he would.
But they can't play for Ireland u20s because of the cup.
Players need the confidence and opportunity.

Connacht have recruited Gavin Tynan, Cian Kelleher and Jack Feeny for their U20 squad. Very good strengthening of the squad and considering they will be favourites for the title too.

Dissapointed not to see Oisin Heffernan return though.

Anybody else interested in seeing what club(s) the current 6th years in Terenure are going to next year? Would I be right in saying most past pupils join Terenure rfc but that club hasn't really been on par with the likes of Belvo, Landsdowne etc in recent times? Could be interesting

O'Neill is going to Belvedere afaik. Don't know about Brewer, Dardis is going to UCD. Patrick Thornton's brother is UCD's 10 so maybe he'd come to UCD too.

Any up and coming back row won't get a look in at UCD next season. so many good ones there and still underage and plenty overage for senior team as well Big scholarships are done the rest may be on smaller scholarships covering fees etc

You could well be right as Jack Dwan also played in that game and he is definitely not U18 next year and in fact played in an u19 trial the following week!

With Van Der Flier moving on from 21's, and there will be absences throughout the year with Timmons gone for both interpros and Ireland 20's. There is certainly an opportunity for a backrower, especially one as good as Moloney to get in there. The number of players used by UCD and Lansdowne this season was massive.

They will be there for the start of the 21 season and miss games between January and March and willl be around for the end of the league, All Ireland, McCorry etc

My opinion is that back rows with ambition won't get ahead of them or get a chance to compete for an Irish 20's spot plenty of other clubs for them to go to where they will start and get a chance to impress and not be pushed aside when the great ones such as Leavy and co return and better for rugby in general if all the top ads aren't in the same club or college competing against each other when they could be tars on other teams

Gilsenan plays mens, hasn't turned out for 21's all year, he's been injured for half the season anyway. The squad rotation in both big sides UCD and Lansdowne is massive. There's rarely the same 23 out there every weekend. People like Leavy haven't played that much all year for anyone really, be it Leinster or their club. Same with Tom Farrell in Lansdowne. The people who are on scholarships in colleges like trinity and ucd make up the minority, there's players there that play all season and do just as good a job as the person they seem to be "being pushed aside" for as you put it.

Leavy and Farrell were injured most of the season but when fit they did both come on in the McCorry Final. Leavy destined for greatness in my opinion. Farrell will just have to start again and probably hope to play some 21's at the start and then kick on with the Lansdowne senior team and hope to get an academy spot.

By the way vey few of the ucd premier squad are not on some sort of scholarship and definetly not the majority as u say. People would be shocked at the ucd rugby budget but is now coming under a bit more scrutiny. Biggest day for ucd will be against Shannon this weekend where if they win their players will be able to push on and play at the top level with UCD in 1a as with so many academy players Leinster want them to be playing at the top level
