Replacing low voltage halogen lights

A friend of mine has low voltage halogen bulbs in his timber clad ceiling (sunroom) and he is concerned about heat build up and fire. I checked one of the fittings and found part of the wiring melted and the timber scorched by heat.

I am trying to find out if it is best to remove Halogens and transformers and fit 220v Led lights or fit new transformers for each light and a fitting to take Led GU10. I understand the exiting transformers wont be suitable for Led lights as there output voltage is 12v.

Any suggestions appreciated. There are 18 light fittings in total.
