Moving maps from old PC to laptop?

Have a nuvi 255W with lifetime updates but originally downloaded maps to my old PC which I haven't even turned on for a year or so. I use my laptop all the time now and want to use that to update my unit.

I cant seem to find an option on myGarmin to download the maps to my laptop. All it seems to do is ask me to download the updater but when I try to launch this nothing happens at all. I assume this is because I dont have any maps on my laptop to update??

Contacted garmin and they sent a guide. However the first step is to download the updater and run it. But as I have said, nothing happens.

    Any ideas?

Sounds like the problem may be with your laptop.
Have you tried our on any other computer?

What do you mean by "nothing happens"? Any error messages or the like?

You do need the Garmin USB drivers installed on your laptop, and have your nuvi connected at the time you run the map updater, that's all I can think of off hand.

Maybe you should run web updater (may wipe any save info on the device ie pois, so make sure you are ok with that!), or look in the software section of this link . from this area of the Garmin site. Make sure you have your device plugged in,as well as any SD card that contains any map you want to upgrade, and that the site recognises the device, then you will know if the site is communicating with the device.

The maps usually only exist on your device, so if the website cant automatically search and find your device and the maps that are on the device, (not just the name of the device that you registered in my garmin) it wont upgrade them, thats my best guess.

P.S. that web updater is good for updating your firmware, and so may allow you to use a bigger SD card, but it also caused me problems installing maps, so uninstall it after you update your firmware if you have problems.

I had the unit connected and it shows up on my dashboard but there isn't an option to download the full maps (like you would when you register a new device). It shows some product keys that I have not used (didn't update since start of last year) but when I try to use the most recent one it says it is invalid.
All attempts to download/update the maps direct me to the updater download. After I download this and try to launch it, it doesn't launch.

All I have in the garmin folder on my laptop is the updater, but I assume I should have the full maps, mapinstall etc in there like I have on the old PC.

Can I just copy the folders from my PC to my laptop??
