Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I use both sites daily and ive noticed they have similar sub forums,so I reckon Boards should promote itself worldwide to gain more followers, first step is to start a Boardsgonewild thread to get the perverts (90%) of the internet here,2nd step is to create sub forums for different countries world wide so they don't feel left out! 3rd step is for the admins to send me a cheque for all the extra income Boards will generate from ads aimed at our foreign friends.

    1)What does AH think?
2)Following AH rules please ridicule my idea and abuse me personally over it:D
    3)Boardsgonewild is at least a good idea:pac:

reddit is impossible to use and navigate through. I don't know how it's so popular. I never use it.

    Nn. Nooo!

Leave it as it is. I like that it is mostly Irish wit and witticisms here with a bit of whatever else the internet has to offer thrown in.

Plus it is saturated with enough Irish spazzo's here. Don't want the rest of the worlds spazzo's clogging up every thread with shite.

There are enough forums for that. Jeez it would descend into a YouTubey mess.

No. Reddit can go drown in a hole along with all those other "meme" sites. Yes I realize not all their boards are dedicated to memes, but I just find the community to be absolutely terrible.

I like Reddit. Its also got karma whores like the Thanks whores here on Boards.

Also someone suggested a Gonewild forum in the forum requests and it got shot down pretty fast. I'd support one here but too many people would complain if there was.

What's the story with private forums? Have been here a long time, but I don't know what the private forums have as topics. Is there a list somewhere of the private forums? I can't find it if there is.

It got shot down, because Boards isn't marketed for that kind of audience. There's plenty of other sites out there for it. Boards doesn't need to be a mashed up collection of them.

    No.
    Most are by invite only.
Some are semi private to keep trolls and minors out but are still known about site wide.

    It's so awkward and confusing.

Save this as bookmarklet on your browsers toolbar. Then when you visit any of their image forums, click it will automatically expand all the images and show them full size. There is a bug in it as it shows them twice but better then none!

    javascript:%20var%20x=%20$(%22.content%22).find(%22a%22).each(function()%7Bvar%20href=$(this).attr(%22href%22);if((!$(this).hasClass(%22drowsapMorphed%22))%20&&%20($(this).next(%22.drowsapMorphed%22).length==0)%20&&%20href%20&&%20(href.indexOf('imgur')%3E=0%20%7C%7C%20href.indexOf('jpeg')%3E=0%20%7C%7C%20href.indexOf('jpg')%3E=0%20%7C%7C%20href.indexOf('png')%3E=0))%7Bvar%20ext%20=(href.indexOf('imgur')%3E=0%20&&%20href.indexOf('jpg')%3C0%20&&%20href.indexOf('png')%3C0)%20?%20'.jpg'%20:'';%20var%20img%20=%20$(%22%3Ca%20class='drowsapMorphed'%20href='%22+href+%22'%20target='blank'%20style='display:block'%3E%3Cimg%20style='display:block;max-width:780px;'%20src='%22+href+%20ext+%22'%20/%3E%3C/a%3E%22);$(this).after(img);%7D%7D);

HoverZoom (look on Chrome store) my good man!

I used to hate reddit, but with practice + HoverZoom it becomes a fantastic experience.

EDIT: Plus many people describe Reddit's greatness as: 10% Posts, 90% Comments. Just stay away from advice animals.

Also, go into a subreddit like r/askreddit and click 'top' then 'all time' for some brilliant reading. I spend a full day just going through every post in amazement.

    LOL :D

    It was a touchy subject.

In the twilight zone of boards you have social groups which have no real functionality private ( by invite) or public

    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/group.php

Or hosted forums private ( by invite) or public.

    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/forumdisplay.php?f=80

Don't ever try to get a boards forum set up.

On reddit the admins are employees, moding is different and anyone can set up a forum so its a different on-line experience.

Reddit Enhancement Suite. Truly needed when browsing reddit.

And if you stick to some of the smaller subreddits (reddit speak for a individual forum) there is a lot of intelligent conversations here. Bit like boards, you need to leave AH to see some intelligent conversation.

One thing that is wonderful about reddit is the downvote system. Self moderating. All of the asshats just get downvoted to the bottom. Its an excellent way to sort good comments out.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,303 ✭✭✭N64

Most of the content on cool videos/pictures is reposted from reddit anyway.

To everyone posting comments about the sites poor layout/design, once you get over the initial shock it's actually ridiculously simple to navigate around. For people who are confused and don't know how to use it, CALM THE **** down for a second.

    1. Go to reddit.com
    2. Click sort by 'top' and 'today' or 'this week'.
    3. Click into the 'comments' section underneath a post. Then you can read all the comments and then cick into the link at the top to see the actual link/image/picture. Or google HoverZoom, best extension ever.
    4. The topics at the very top of the page are the equivalent to forums on Boards.

What I love about Reddit is that all the pointless and stupid comments get downvoted to oblivion leaving you with hilarious threads full of puns and in-jokes and insightful comments that make up one of the reasons I love it so much.

There are literally thousands of subreddits to subscribe to, meaning if you don't want your homepage clogged up with memes YOU DON'T HAVE TO.

r/IamA has some amazing stories. Like someone else said, just sort it by 'top and 'all time'. Then have a read and tell me you don't like Reddit, I dare you!

    r/askreddit is another great subreddit.

Interested in sports? Movies? Star wars? Cooking? Life advice? They're all there. http://redditdirectory.com/ Has an easy list of them, click on any category on the left.

For Irish in-jokes and Ireland-related discussions, Boards wins hands down (for now :P). For everything else, reddit's the way to go!

Reddit, probably the site I visit most often during screen time, some absolutely hilarious comment developments occur on the most benign posts, totally gas. As has been stated above, a bit of tweaking and it's not hard to remove the memes and the kittens, totally un-uptight which is the best thing about it. Boards, let's face it, is grimly uptight at times.

When I first found reddit it was through that f7u200 part with the "rage faces", and i thought it was so bizarre that those were so popular. It was also weird how someone would just vectorise some reaction image and people would call it a "new meme", that they thought they invented the concept and take credit for it.
Then I found that "advice animals" part and those guys were even worse at it.

I really don't like their community and that upvote/downvote thing just homogenises people's opinions on things to the point where every comment you see is pratically saying the same thing (which are largely unfunny jokes, bad puns and some weird generic leftist slogans).

The atheism part seems largely based around being smug and yelling at christians in supermarkets for existing, and the politics part seems largely "hey guys obama's definitely gonna go through with this promise" and "look how dumb the republicans are".

The MOST bizarre part is how they consider themselves internet superheroes and have to sponsor every single initiative and piggyback the media coverage (if there's any at all), when really their role in the internet at large is being the graveyard for bad 3 year old memes and being the scapegoat for /v/ when they want to mess around with Bioware.

both forum styles suit different purposes, once you figure out how to customize reddit, it's awesome; however you're totally right, reddit and Boards serve totally different purposes.

Reddit is an international website, boards is Irish, there's no /r/irelandgameofthrones /r/irelandEdu or /r/irelandfacialhairandhats nor need there be. there are already too many reddits, we don't need a subreddit for every single countries separate interests on the planet.
