Hi! I wanted your opinion on this. I have a cash heavy business and bank with AIB. I do my lodgement once a week to organize my schedule a little bit. Today, the guy at the AIB counter told me that for the bags of coins, if they were not full bags,he will not be able to take them and there is no way for me to lodge them. Is this legally right? AIB is already changing me money handling fees and yet they don't want to spend time if the coins are not in a full bag!!! (Mind you, the coins are bagged separately in proper bags from the bank and labelled as to how many pieces are there if they are not full bags!) I think this is ridiculous. Isn't their job as a bank to accept any lodgement from me? Next thing I will find out is that I cannot lodge notes unless they are a bundle. Do they want people to start keeping money under the matress? In my opinion, it is to their benefit if people lodge more money in their banks! Does any know what I can do about this? Thanks!

Hold onto the partial bags until they are full before bringing them in?

This is BOIs response to much the same query: http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2056594415
Maybe an offical complaint is in order, complaining here will get you nowhere.

When is the money (including lost growth) Michael Noonan took in the Pension Levy going to be paid back?

You could use the change converter machine at Tesco. They charge about 6% so probably less than a bank charge.

According to this AIB charge a 2% cash handling fee for lodging coins.

So for every bag with, say €10 in it that the teller has to count, they're getting 20c. Given the amount of time it would take to count each part-full bag, I'd consider that a loss-maker.

While I'm not a fan of banks, I don't think any business should have an obligation to do something for a loss. Would you?

Banks have never liked taking partially full bags. They're a nuisance. Notes are totally different.

I don't think any bank/credit union will take partial bags anymore. Think it's just the policy everywhere now

Mad as it takes 2 secs to weigh the bag!

It's all about the presentation of the lodgement. Tbh it's a pain in the arse having to take in partial bags.

It's down to each individual cashier, some will take it others not. However the biggest part is the time of day. Do it when they are busy you'll be told no. As for weighing them, yep may only take a few mins to do but in the eyes of the bank all those mins add up!

It's a service they provide not a legal requirement. As suggested just make up full bags.

...then write up the amount on the lodgement, add it to the customer account on the computer, record it separately on the branch cash record and repeat this process for every part-full bag the customer gives you...

As a result of the bank not take coins, we had to set up a new excel sheet, record the amount every day, record how many full bags we were able to lodge at the end of the week, record how much was carried over and balance this sheet every month.

Al those things take time and add up so the logical thing would be to refuse change altogether.....only we had a newsagents.
