So we're going over to do a J1 in New York this summer. Just looking for advice for those who have already secured an apartment to date, what kind of things did you look out for, steps did you take to make sure the apartment in question was not a scam? Anything to look out for? Generally speaking what is the normal amount that is asked for as a desposit, when trying to get an apartment?

Do you pay the first months rent on receiving the apartment keys? Any tips would be great. For those going to New York in particular, which site did you find the best for looking up apartments and were most trustworthy?

    Thanks!

Craigslist is the best site, but there are also scams. Make sure you take photos the day you move in, and note anything that is broken with the landlord.

Make sure you ask how many people are allowed to live in the flat- many places have rules about that, such as maximum 2 people per bedroom (so in a 2 bedroom flat, you could only have 4 people, even if there is a large livingroom with pull out couch).

1 months deposit and 1 months rent when signing the contract is normal. Since you will have no credit history, they may ask 2 months deposit.

Ok thanks. What would be the typical things to look out for when looking at craiglist and diffrentiating if it's a scam or not? So lets say 1,800 is the rent per month, what would be the average amount on deposit required would you reckon? Cheers for your quick reply :)

Deposit is generally one months rent.

There is also the issue of brokers fee to assess but maybe they waive those on short term rentals

I found a lot of sub lets in the US were actually happy to let you pay in cash with no contract. Now, remember you have no rights etc. if they suddenly decide to turf you out but at the same time this negates brokers fees/credit checks etc.
