OK so as some of you may know there is a new system of placing interns after medical school. The old system of a college being affiliated to a hospital is now gone and is replaced by a ranking system where number 1 ranked in the country gets their first choice similar to the CAO system.

Im just wondering does anyone know how the ranking system will work between colleges if there is no common exam? Will it be based on GPA and if so will the average GPA in the college be taken into account?

It seems like a complicated system that nobody has ever really expalined to me.

    Thanks

    This might help:-

6.2 How is centile ranking determined?
The centile ranking is determined using a formula which expresses the position of a student relative to the position of all other students in the graduating class. The formula for calculating the centiles has been provided to all Medical Schools in Ireland and Medical Deans outside Ireland will be required to use the same formula when calculating the centiles for any of their students who apply to intern posts in Ireland. All applicants who did not complete their final exams on their first sitting will be ranked on the bottom centile.
6.3 What happens if two people with the same centile ranking choose the same intern post?
If two (or more) people on the same centile ranking choose the same intern post, the selection is made on the basis of a lottery. This lottery selection will be monitored by a person who is not involved in the matching process.
6.4 How will centile ranking be compared for applicants from different medical schools and different countries?
There is no common exit exam from Medical School in Ireland and no common entrance exam to internship. Therefore, centile ranking is the comparison which is in place for graduates from different Medical Schools. The centile rank compares graduates relative to others in their own class and does not compare the actual marks achieved by a graduate in one School versus actual marks achieved by another graduate in a different School.

Have they released what the formula is?

It sounds like they've made it more complicated than top of the class = 100 and so on.
Which I guess they'd have to considering most medical classes have more than 100 graduating doctors....

Will that mean taking results of the 5/6 years into account or will it only be from year 3 forward?

The Centile rank must be calculated using the following formula only:

    C = X/N * 100

    Where:
C is the centile (otherwise known as percentile) ranking
N is the total number in the data set – in this case the total number in the Medical School’s graduating medical class
X is the number of students in the graduating class who were ranked at a point equal to or less than the rank position of the person whose centile you are calculating.

Please note that the centile provided must be based on the total graduating class and not the number of applicants to posts from that School. Please refer to the worked example overleaf.

Worked example for calculation of centile ranking: (provided for illustrative purposes only)

You wish to calculate the centile ranking for Mary O’Brien.

The total number in Mary’s graduating medical class is 142: N=142

Mary achieved a final medical degree at a level where 135 students in the graduating class were at a level equal to or less than Mary’s position: X=135

The centile ranking is calculated using the formula C= X/N*100

    Mary’s centile ranking is therefore: C = 135/142 * 100
    = 95th centile

(“/ “meaning divided by and “*” meaning multiplied by)

Note: centiles must be calculated on the basis of the total number of students in the graduating class.
