Rust Removal

I have a heated towel rail in the bathroom, with a chrome type finish. over the past couple of years rust has being building up on it, just a few spots here and there at first... but now it's getting really bad looking - and I'm sure it might cause some damage also.

I tried using a toothbrush to scrub some rust off earlier. Some came off but not a lot. I know I wont be able to get rid of it all but i'd like to get rid of as much as possible. What's the best thing to use?

Fine steel wool and a little light oil.
OOO or OOOO is the best grade wool to use.

Would that not scratch the surface and damage the chrome finish?

Nope, its the best way to do it.
Your not using a pot scrub, its very fine steel wool and Chrome is hard stuff.

Steel wool is good, follow this up by polishing with Autosol to buff it up.
