hey folks im darren im 25 and i have made a pretty big decision to train for the dublin marathon.

i'm having a major problem on deciding what pair of runners i need for this venture!

At the minute I have a pair of Asics Blackhawks ive had for training that are about a year old which have significant wear on the outside edge of the soles (i know from what ive picked so far that its important) and I am overweight at the minute but losing weight at a fairly steady pace.

While i know that that a gait analysis in the best way to figure it out, im a bit concerned about shelling out a load of money on a good pair trainers that might only be suitable for a couple of months if i lose a stone or two (fingers crossed!)

However the wear on the outside edge of the soles is telling me something that i cant figure out. Help please!

i bought my runners in Elverys, they have a treadmill and a camera and film you running in your socks so they can see what runner would best suit you.

It's completely free and there's no obligation to go with runner x over runner y.
I only spent 70euros - but if you're running 10/20k your runners are the only thing between you and the hard ground, its an investment.

Hope this helps, I'm sure others might say Elverys and their camera is a waste of time, but for me it did the job, i'm not a die hard runner just 10/15k runs

Get gait analysis done in a REPUTABLE/SPECIALIST running store and they will advise you properly.;)

I have a thing against gait analysis. When you’re on a treadmill you run differently to when you’re on the road, similarly when you run in your socks you will run differently.. so fitting shoes based on running in socks and on a treadmill seems a little off to me, in my opinion.

So where are these reputable specialists Johnny? I'd go to Dublin or Newry if it meant saving yo-yos and me knees.....

@ Darren-What i mean are stores dedicated to running, run by people who run and care about runners,as opposed to High St sports stores who are only interested in taking your money.
@ Mossess- I had my gait done in a mini gym being eyeballed whilst running barefoot and in shoes-not a treadmill in sight

I got my GAIT analysis done in Belfast, when i lived there doing my masters, I got it done in Upandrunning, they have/had a shop in Newry too.

They gave me a pair of neutral runners for me to run on the treadmill. I ran for about 30 seconds and they were able to tell me I had a dodgy knee (which I never told them about) and told me what runners to buy. I went with saucony omni8s, but have since bought asics kayanos cos I couldn't get saucony in Korea.

They are a specialist store, so I'd definitely recommend them.

The wear on the outside is common due tomost people who heel strike.
it's the inital contact area soit takes a beating.have a look at the heel counter and any wear on the medial side of the runner.
The blackhawk is a very entry level asics shoe so if you plan on increasing your training for the marathon a high quality shoe is a must. You might spend 100-130euro but it's worth it in the long run.

If you do choose elvery's you will be sold a pair of insoles which you probably won't need.

No beating Amphibian King Bray-I got 2 pairs off them recently. Guys are sound and NO pressure to buy. Above all they listen and don't just throw you a pair of asics Kayanos like Elverys seem so fond off(cause they are the most expensive).
