Put a post up 6 months ago about a crashing Packard Bell iextreme M5722. Never really got it sorted so decided to just upgrade it as they were badly built from new.

Original Spec:

Core2 Quad, Q8300 @2.50ghz
Graphics: Nvidia GT220
Sw: Windows 7 premium 32-bit

I already have a replacement graphics card (not installed yet) its a Sapphire HD6850-1GB.

A new power supply is definitely needed, and on the advice of a workmate am thinking about upgrading to an i5 2500K cpu, that would need a matching motherboard. Fitted ram should be ok for now, the machine ran Solidworks ok in the past. Will also look at upgrading to 64 bit as part of the rebuild.

Any advice?

This comes slightly over budget. From the specs I can find on that machine the case is mATX so it should be able to take the PSU I spec'd as well.. The RAM you have isn't compatible since it's DDR2 so I put 8GB of DDR3 in instead.

Edit: Just realised that you're paying by Visa, HWVS only take Bank Transfers or PayPal. I'll post a dabs.ie build soon.

Currently a post detailing a similar problem on the same machine it looks like my HD may be suspect also, any suggestions for a cost effective HD.

Okay, got rid of Overclocking on the HWVS build and added in a 500GB drive. If you're using PayPal you'll have to pay a 3% fee on top of that so it'll come out around €380.

Actually, comparable build on dabs is cheaper when factoring in the PayPal charge.

If you have a bank account, you can use HWVS. A bank transfer is easier than paying by PayPal/Visa in many respects.

I'd also maybe spend a bit of time trying to find out what's wrong with your current machine. If don't need a new hard drive or PSU or whatever, then it'll save you a lot, and in a build like this, that extra money could be put to good use.

Power supply is a must, Packard Bell only threw a 250w psu into it. Grafix card needs at least 450w. HD is hard to check, nothing I am doing seems to work to get the thing booting. Have some checkware at the ready if it'l boot. If it won't I'm going to have to bite the bullet and change the HD as well.
