Should alcohol count in beer be lowered?

I was in Dunnes today buying some beer. I felt like I wanted to just have a decent drink with low alcohol count. Lowest I could find was 4% ( maybe I did not look hard enough who knows. )

But it got me thinking....should the likes of bulmers, coors light, bud etc release cans with a lower count of say 3% alcohol ( possibly lower ) to those who like to have a drink but are not interested in the major alcohol intake?

I think there's non-alcoholic beer out there somewhere for the likes of you.

would work for me, I like alcohol just not so much of it and currently my options are non alcoholic or regular, it would be nice to have a happy medium so I can get semi drunk more often.

Smithwicks is 3.8%. Guinness Mid Strength is 2.8%. Becks is about 0.05%.

There's beer there to cater for all tastes in terms of strength. The problem is that supermarkets only stock the generic macro ****e that the plebians drink to get pissed and that tends to be 4% and stronger.

just leave half a pint before you order a new one

There is a low alcohol bulmers, you should have looked harder, its 2.5% I think.

Just buy herself a bottle of fanta and naggin of vodka, then you can regulate the alcohol content of her own drinks

But please feck off away from cocking up everyone elses beer because you are a lightweight

Actually if you bought a can of carling for €1 and mixed it 50:50 with water you would end up with a 2% ABV beverage with no discernible difference in taste.

    Hell no!!

Have you tasted low alcohol beer OP?

No it's ridiculous enough as it is having to drink liters of the stuff as it is to get even a slight buzz out of it.
I'm totally gone off beer myself anyways though. Vodka ftw.

That's only the way to look at it if you drink to get drunk.... The op has a fair point, there should be a weaker option so you can enjoy socialising for the evening and no end up as pissed. He might want to sit with his mates while they drink 8 pints, but feel he prefers to stop after 5 normal pints. I know thats the way I feel at times.

wait let me be more clear here. I am not saying change the world of alcohol. Coors can keep the 4.3 % of alcohol in their can if they want. But they should also ( like bulmers as I've been told ) have another kind available with a lower count inside of it. I think it would increase their business to be honest and keep lightweights like me very pleased. :):D

This must be an idea that seems smart when drunk. It definitely doesn't when sober.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,219 ✭✭✭woodoo

Yes it should be lowered to about 3% imo.

Drinks Becks or lucozade, and don't be annoy'in real men with yer silly questions.

i think there should be more low alcohol options out there, it would be nice to go out for a social pints midweek and feel confident in driving to work the next day. But have to say 0% beer does taste a bit pants

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,635 ✭✭✭eth0

They should have a 1% beer. I'd be able to have 3 or 4 of them and still drive home under the limit

They're making it ridiculous, they should have left to limit alone.
Driving with 2 pints should be accepted in my opinion. I have a breathalyser myself and it has always taken 5 pints for me to be over the limit.

Thats exactly what I'm on about. Having the choice. it might even encourage others to drink responsibly methinks.

Might as well just drink the alcohol-free stuff.

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

I f you're drinking and still worrying about percentages then you're doing it wrong.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 338 ✭✭EmatoelDiablo

I've been drinking Coors Light and even though it's 4.3% it's grand even in large quantities. I wouldn't mind a 3% though, might be easier to drink.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 12,456 ✭✭✭✭Mr Benevolent

Just drink less. Or more slowly. I prefer high % beers, usually above 9%. Much tastier but not for the Guiness/Bud/Heineken/Carlsberg cardboard cutout pussies.

No, if anything beer should have more alcohol.

You can get some excellent local beers in Germany with a high alcohol percentage. There's a lovely one I just can think of the name of I used to always drink, ****, it's annoying me now!

    ...I think it was 6.5%

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,073 ✭✭✭Pottler

Yes, the alcohol count should definitly be lowered. Keep the alcohol levels the same obviously, just lower the figure printed on the side of the bottle, so we can look down on others with their high alcohol muck and feel smug about how healthy we are. Or somthing.
FFS, just dont drink it if you want weaker stuff then, get ribena, its called alcohol for a reason.

at 2.8% the mid strength only has half the duty rate and a little over half the alcohol content that duty is paid on

    so why isn't a lot cheaper ?

Poor choice of beer OP, if anything anyway the alcohol content should be higherened in those beers

Tesco have a 2% beer, any lower than that might as well be non-alcoholic really

The higher the alcohol content, the less you have to drink, therefore you save more money!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,243 ✭✭✭✭Jesus Wept

No, just drink less of it if you want to get less drunk.
    You're welcome.

If you shop around OP there are loads of low alcohol beers. I have a taste for the druids lately... cheap and nasty at 6%. 8 for €10 can't go wrong.

It tastes better coming up than it does going down... Cat piss at it's finest.

To lower the alcohol you would need to water down the drink even more, so no I wouldn't support such a move. 4/5% is a grand percent, sure in the UK you can get cans of 9% beer for around €2 (the uk probably do need an increase in some areas, not here)
