Dublin Marathon 2012 - 'Improvers' thread

    planning (hoping) for a 3:20 this year. Had a disaster with cramp at last year DCM - finished in 4:05.

    Things I'm doing different this year.
    * Doing Easy runs 'easy' - trying to do 4-5m recovery runs at super slow pace.
    * Taking a 'recovery shake' (2:1:1) after each intense run
    * Doing a good mixture of runs during the week (tempos' / intervals / hills / LSR)
    * Nutrition& Hydration - putting more emphasis on these - taking electrolytes before and after LSR and intensive workouts.

    Overall have been injury free this year as a result - doing about 35-40 mpw at this stage.
    Ran a 18m LSR last sat, finished strong and recovered very well - done a revcovery 3m next day and a 7m temp the day after.

    Hoping for a 70m run in the upcoming 10mile race on Sat.

    Ran home from work last night (6.5 miles) No pain while running but iced and stretched afterwards just as precaution. Its still not 100% but its more of a niggle than an injury I would say. As long as I manage it I think it will be ok. Will probably schedule a physio visit soo aswell just to get a health check done on all niggles. I've developed a bit of a niggle in my left achilles now too which I need to mind. Never rains but in pours!

    Going to go ahead with Frank Duffy Ten Mile at weekend but rather than race it hard this I will try and do it at PMP. That would still see me do a PB by about a minute:)

    Good luck to anyone else running at the weekend. Maybe we'll bump into each other and not even realise it !

    Hi Guys,

    I’m training for my second Dublin Marathon this year and using the Hal Higdon Novice 2 Guide which suggests average 30/35 miles per week- 1 long run 3 shorter runs and a cross train session. I used this in 2010 and ran a time of 4:30 which I was happy at the time as an injury prevented training for 3 crucial weeks.

    Anyway I hope to run this one in under 4 hours (3:59 would do!) and I think this is realistic as my half marathon times are under 1:50.

    Yesterday I had an ad hoc chat with a running shop manager (he was big into the sport) and he mentioned that using this guide I wouldn’t achieve my time as it focuses on getting novice runners across the line only – in usually slower times than 4. He said that as the longest run is just 20m it doesn’t condition for improvement of times that much. Is this rubbish? And if so is there a different training plan that could produce better times?

    I'd say 'rubbish'.
    1 - I used basically the same plan and ran 3.58 in my first marathon. I know other people have too.
    2. Lot of marathon plans peak at 20 mile long run, not just the Higdon one.

    That said, there are other plans available, that feature higher mileage each week (through the week, not ono the long run in particular) and a mix of different run types, so it's not like HH is the last word

    DCM Goal = 3:59:59. Ran Berlin 2011 in 4:02 off the back of a completely ad hoc and unscientific training regime, then blew up in DCM 2011 due to an unscientific failure to do anything useful in between those events.

    Hopefully P&D brings the science this year, and targets start being met for a change!

    This is my second marathon - last year ran 4:10, but didn't really follow any plan. This year would love to hit 3:59:xx. Last two weeks have been tough, so I may have to re-evaluate my goal nearer the time. Good luck to everyone doing 10 miler tomorrow!

    Been on hols so missed a week and 2 LSRs. Made the decision not to bring runners with me, Spain was very very hot so would have meant very early or very late runs and that kinda interferes with usual holiday activities based around eating, drinking and sleeping! So I will have to slot back in to Week 9 and see how the LSR goes on Sunday. Anyone planning a half Marathon and if so where?

    Am due to do Great Scottish Run in Glasgow next weekend (Half Marathon) If I hadn't promised my brother and if my Mother and Sister were not travelling over (to do 10K) I wouldn't be doing any race this weekend as injury flared up a little after the Frank Duffy 10 mile last weekend. I know I shouldn't run but I must. I'd be happy to not do the Dublin half(which I'm registered for also) as long as I can get through this one. I know I am putting DCM at risk here if injury gets worse.

    So the plan is to drop back a wave (or muster area as they call it) and run with my brother who has never done this distance before. I figure if I take it really handy and help my bro get through the race, I may just come through it without too much damage done.

    Right, I'm in.

    No plan yet, ran 4:28 last year, think I could go sub 4 this year but have a lot of work to do.

    So far this year I've done Connemara Half in 1:42, Clontarf Half in 1:45, had a nightmare of a run in the Humbert Challenge Half Iron at 2:21:53.

    Up to Connemara I was running 4-5 times a week but after that I added a lot of cycling ahead of a cycling holiday, Half Iron, Gael Force and a few Duathlons, need to concentrate on running again now and get back to the form I had in April.

    I am hoping for a time about 3:50 to 3:59. I was aiming for 3:59 last year but I was gone after 26k and ended up at 4:15. I did get inside the 4 hours in Kildare in May though. So now, some days, I think I have to aim at 3:50, I have to feel I'm making progress, or at least trying to. And I don't want to be over ambitious and have it end in painful failure. Other days, when things are not going so well, I think I should just try to do 4 hours and try to enjoy the event.

    I plan to run the half in the Park on Sept 15th. I will do a mini one week taper for that.

Am in France next week for 2 weeks and am concerned that due to heat it will be tough to get in runs especially LSRs. Will try early morning runs but am not an early runner!

Struggling again with runs around night shift pattern - 18m LSR after work @6am was nice though, beautiful quiet countryside in lovely morning sunshine.
    19|RedB|P&D - 55|9|5|49M|275M|LT+Endur Week. Ok week but struggled with some of Marathon-pace long run over hilly section. Too slow on uphills, too fast on downhills but average was just right :).
    20|Trigger26 |Club coach sub 3.30|9|3|22M|266M|Was in bits after Gaelforce and just did two easy runs, raced half marathon with new pb of 130.08, in bits but delighted on track
    21|Jim0 |P&D - 55|9|5|80.36km|591.09km|A tough week - had to hit four runs on consecutive days, and fairly tired by the end of it all. But keeping the show on the road. Trialling High5 gels at the moment.

    Only ran once this week since last weekends Frank Duffy ten mile. Resting injury. Did 5 miles last night and felt ok while running.Its when I'm not running that it bothers me more...strange.

    Had a sports massage on thursday and had some bruising afterwards..hope thats good bruising and not bad bruising if you get my drift?

    Anyway the big risk is that I'm off to Glasgow today. half marathon (Great Scottish Run ) in the morning. Contrary to previous posts have now decided to at least see can I break 2 hrs..injury or not...Did 2:03 in CLontarf half in July.

    Wish me luck! Hopefully I can come through it unscathed and DCM chances not totally wrecked! Race report could be an interesting read.:eek:

    Good luck with LSRs this weekend particularly the HHInter1 club!

    Are there pacers in the Great Scottish Run ? If so, maybe tuck in with the 2hr bunch. You will get great support and you will fly through the miles.:)

    17m LSR went well today. Had to take gel at 15m as the legs were starting tio fall off. Last 2 miles were grand.

    The good news is that you were probably finished the run by the time the gel kicked in! They take time to absorb so you ran the whole thing on your own steam - you're stronger than you thought you were:)
