    Are there pacers in the Great Scottish Run ? If so, maybe tuck in with the 2hr bunch. You will get great support and you will fly through the miles.:)

    17m LSR went well today. Had to take gel at 15m as the legs were starting tio fall off. Last 2 miles were grand.

    Thanks Skidrow. well done on the LSR. am so jealous as i havent got that far yet in my lsr cos of injury.

    yes there are pacers i believe so will tuck in behind as you say !

Struggling again with runs around night shift pattern - 18m LSR after work @6am was nice though, beautiful quiet countryside in lovely morning sunshine.

    Hey all,

    In good shape with my training and all going according to plan so far. One issue is bothering me though.

    I was just checking the course map and noticed the energy drink listed is "Spar Sports Drink". I presume this means the extremely cheap isotonic drink available in all Spars

    For all of my longer runs I have always used a couple of bottles of Lucozade Sport, Powerade or whatever else. But this stuff is very poor (in my opinion). I tried it out today and it tasted like a very cheap sugary imitation and being blunt tasted dreadful.

    I realise this is an unusual complaint maybe, but I really am not too keen on carrying a decent couple of sports drinks the whole way, yet feel very comfortable with them as part of my routine.

    Am I being unfair to the Spar Sports Drink?

    Any thoughts appreciated?

    Drink the water at the water stations. If you really need carbs, bring a few gels, but don't drink them with any sports drinks. Try drinking water only on your next long run.

    I haven't had a gel in months and I don't miss them. Water all the way!

    Taste- wise I think the spar/centra ones are fine .Jury still out on how effective they are though.

    Came through it in one piece. Mixed emotions about the run. Chip time 2:00:41 which is a new PB on what was a hilly course, so given that my previous pb of 2:03 was done in Clontarf which is dead flat, I've a lot to be happy about. Tactically, don't think I ran the race that well but lack of knowledge of course probably didn't help there. definitely think I can do better and glad to have the chance to do it in Phoenix park on 15th. One thing I do know is that lack of LSRs recently due to injury hasn't helped my cause. Full race report to follow.

    Friday had a 13km run, had a 10k race on Sat (roundwood, bray lakers) (1.04) Got my long run of 15miles out of the way on Sunday.. bed early last night..taking a break today.

    An experienced runner recommended I run at least 10km minimum per outing now, think the challange is starting to set in now.

Did a few 5 milers but they were a struggle. Have been playing catch up for the past 2 weeks since I got home but did a 17.8 mile LSR this morning at 9.07 pace. Have revised my target for DCM to sub 3.45 (had been hoping for sub 3.30). Have also slowed my training runs as was getting pain in shin where I previously had a stress fracture. Not really looking forward to the heavy mileage of the next few weeks but it will be worth it in the end.

I would have preferred someone with me that day, after though I thought it's good thing to do some long runs by yourself. I know certainly the last part of a marathon is a real examination of yourself. A friend of mind got me thinking this way saying that no way would they run alone, I've heard that from a good few runners. I think a mix is the way to go, any one else?

    I agree with the mix...I do most of my running on my own and have to say the few times i have joined up with other its been wonderful to have the company, not have to be watching & trying to keep pace and just going with the flow..the miles really do just pass by effortlessly(well kinda);), but also running on your own is good sometimes too!!

    +1 for a mix in your training. A lot of the marathon is psychological, and you need to have the mental toughness to get through the tough patches. It's really weird - when you're 22 miles in and suffering, it feels like one of the loneliest places in the world. Even though you're surrounded by other runners & supporters! I don't think that you can ever really prepare for that, but something like a 20 mile run on your own is probably as close as we can get!

    I've always run solo but it can be tough when the mind games start. I'd certainly be up for an LSR in the park before the DCM...just this weekend is tricky so I have to go Sunday and stay local.

    I agree. I always run alone. But the idea of running in a group once in a while appeals to me. So would be up for a "shared" LSR sometime.

    11|Sideline warrior|HH Inter 1|5|5|28.5m|135.9m|Avg pace this week was 8.03 so am going to make concerted effort to slow down on the longer runs. Seems to be best practice. Am in France next week for 2 weeks and am concerned that due to heat it will be tough to get in runs especially LSRs. Will try early morning runs but am not an early runner!

    18|Mr.Wiggle|RunRepublic sub3.30|7|6|83km|450.5km| Took rest day Monday and juggled other runs around to suit. Meant Sun's LSR of 20m was too much for me. Managed only 18m due to severe pains. Happy enough with weeks work though :)
    19|RedB|P&D - 55|10|5|44M|319M|Recovery Week. Easy week. First time doing VO2 session in a long time so took a few reps to get up to speed. Late night Sat meant Sundays med-long run got bumped out to this morning (Mon) so did half it at PMP on fresh legs.
    20|Trigger26 |Club coach sub 3.30|10|4|36M|302M|Did an 18 mile long run and really struggled, have tummy bug which will not feck off!
    21|Jim0 |P&D - 55|10|3|56.83km|647.92km|Life got in the way of training this week. Programme mileage peaks next week so hopefully rightful priority can be restored.
