Going down to a club tonight, possibly going to join up depending on what the experience is like.

Anybody have experience mixing clubs and training plans.

Most training plans have at least one session a week at VO2 or tempo pace. Do one club session a week instead of that session. If there's only one V)2 or tempo session a week in your plan, only go to one club session

Thanks RayCun, was down at Let Cheile tonight for an hour long session. Seemed a pretty good atmosphere and loads of people involved. Would you record mmend being part of a club

I joined a club myself (Bros Pearse AC) a little over a year ago and I've been banging the drum for people to join clubs ever since :)
It makes your faster runs much easier when you are part of a group, it's great for making sure you don't skip or drop out of sessions.

I've thought about joining a club myself but my biggest fear of joining a club is that they might just be too fast or much higher standard than me and I'll end up not enjoying it anymore. I suppose it depends on the club on how well they integrate newbies. I wonder also if at my age(41) it is a bit late for joining a club. My two sons are members of a club but the organisation of the juvenile section is dreadful so that doesn't fill me with confidence either. Jury is still out for me on this one...

Well I'm 40, so don't let that put you off...

Best thing is to go down to the club, try a couple of training sessions, see if there are people around your standard and how well the sessions are organised.

They're seemed to be a great mix of ability at last nights session, from people who had run a number of marathons to people starting out with the Fit4Life schemes.

The club were very friendly and pretty much told us to try a few more training sessions before they would even ask for membership money. All in all I was very impressed.

Hi, just wondering what others think/do in terms of running at their goal marathon pace. I'm aiming for 2 45 so will have to run about 3.9 mins/km.
Its a big difference from last years 3 20, but I was so badly trained then. I ran up to 21 miles at a slightly faster pace than the actual marathon. I wouldn't dream of doing anything like that again, but I'm curious what would others perceive as a safe maximum distance to run at marathon goal pace. I can easily do 39 mins 10k, but is there a distance I could test at this time(16 weeks until marathon) to see if you would be capable of running the pace for entire race. Maybe 10mile/half marathon in race series, at target pace would be good idea??? If I do the half marathon in September though, I'd be afraid a full effort would damage the rest of the training before marathon.
    Thanks

Why, what happened? I would have thought that was a good thing, thats what I had planned on doing but not anymore I guess! New to running so bear with me, apologies if its a stupid question..

Ran the Clontarf Half today instead of my LSR for this weekend and 5m pace run. The plan was to see if I could run it at PMP to see where I was in terms of my goal for 4hr marathon. Mixed results for me. Although I played golf yesterday which has left me with lower back pain before during and after race. So a few pain killers before the race and a dose of deep heat.

Went with 2 hr pacers(who did a great job btw) and was going well till about 10 mile mark when the wheels fell off.Just didn't have it in the legs to keep going at the pace required. Not a big fan for running in the heat either, so that didn't help.I know excuses excuses...:) Threw a gel down but can't say I noticed any great effect, still not sure if those things are any use. Anyway finished in 2:03 which is goo insofar as my previous PB was 2:10 but wondering now if 4hr marathon is just too far a stretch for me as I was struggling in last mile or two today.

Hopefully this is just down to me not having a lot of LSRs done at this stage in the training? Anybody got any words of wisdom for me on this?

Ran 44m this week. 5 runs. 15m long run at 8.30 m/mile pace. This was my first run over 12 miles since April...felt comfortable. Tempo run which included 4 miles at 15k pace (6.51) was more challenging. The four miles were done in 6.39, 6.46, 6.56 and 6.46. A tad erratic and not very controlled. The reality is I haven't got used to that pace of running yet. However, overall a good week.

Is the sessions completed not meant to be this weeks sessions, either that or you are all training like a boss?

Well I can only speak for myself here... But I thought they were sessions per day? ;)

I wouldn't worry about it too much at this stage. You've only just started your training plan and it aims to have you peak for the marathon.

It sounds like the reason you slowed down was due to lack of miles in your legs rather than a lack of glycogen (which is what a gel would help with). Your plan starts out at 24mpw and peaks at near double that. You'll be able to manage the half marathon in the plan much better because you'll be better trained.

Your half marathon and your training runs closer to the date will give you a much better read on whether you're ready to hit 4hrs or not.

I've just signed up for marathon no.3

I did Dingle in 2010 in 4 hr 15 and Cork 2012 in 3 hr 57. My half PB is 1 hr 47.

Would like to get under 3hr 45 but would take 3 hr 50.

Any suggestions for a training plan? I followed Hal H novice 1 and 2. I'd no problem getting the runs in the first year but 4 runs a week this time was hard going at times as had a baby last summer. So I don't want a plan with loads of mileage as I just don't have the time. Am willing to put in quality runs though.....

Sorry I can't be of any help because I'm doing P & D 33-55 per week which might be a bit too much mileage.
I wonder though what you did to shave nearly 20 mins off your marathon time - I did 4:10 in my first marathon and am going for sub 4 in my second one, so any tips would be great! :D
