Hi guys,im looking to get a motor for my 17ft daragh lake fibreglass boat!i have been looking for a while and can get a 55lb thrust electric for 250....where as a small 4hp-ish motor 2nd hand will set me back twice that!!!!what are the benefits to either engine and what should i look for??i would only be using it for small lakes and it wouldnt be overworked!!i also have a 3m inflatable so if it could be used for that aswel it would be good altho the inflatable is only for very small lakes not accessable by road!!!boats only used for fishing!!any feedback would be appreciated!!!

I would go for a petrol one. For the electric you will also have to buy a deepcycle battery and at most you will only get a few hours running.

If it was me I would get both.

The electric will suit for trolling and positioning the boat quietly and accurately but it wont get you anywhere fast on a 17 foot lake boat. I find if we are casting the electircs are very handy for quickly positioning the boat without having to start up an engine - just the turn of a handle.

The petrol will get you moving but will be more noisy of course.

When you say small lakes how small are you talking? If you need to go any distance the electric just wont get you there.

As I said I would get both, I do actually have both. In a pinch I would get the petrol and make do if I really had to. A 4hp petrol should be fine on a 3m inflatable.
