For those who may not frequent the shmup happier sections of this website...

So this slipped underneath the radar last Friday as big AAA games like Diablo 3, Max Payne 3 and Robot Unicorn Attack Evolution hogged the limelight. But the ever wonderful Rising Star Games continue their slow trickle of Cave bullet hell shooter releases with this little beaut. Boasting 16:9 HD visuals (it's telling that us shmup fans consider this a big deal), three game modes and lots of Japanese language shouting, my brief time with the game so far has been entirely favourable. The high score system(s) - with devious mechanics related to your player's summoned Phantom, special collectible katana / orb attacks, and screen filling golden gems - seems entirely worthy of the time commitment and unbroken attention span these games deserve.

Support Rising Star and their continued efforts to bring a long-neglected but absolutely brilliant genre to our shores. Buy Akai Katana, and go to (bullet) hell.

Are HMV, Gamestop, Smyths etc stocking it?

I'm not sure - HMV have been known to get a handful of copies of Rising Star's Cave releases in in the past. Say what you will about Game, but they were the only high street retailer who could be relied upon to get these games in :(

Anyway, spent my first serious bit of time with it last night, and am addicted. The scoring system has clicked, now just to get the vast amount of required practice in.

HMV don't have it in anyway, checked there. Don't have high hopes for gamestop, smyths etc.

Will def. pick it up and then... probably never get round to it.

Dodonpachi hasn't even been out of the box yet. :(
