    Hi all,

Im reinstalling windows on a laptop at home, when ever its downloading windows updates, any program updates, in fact any download at all ie Firefox download manager, all other devices have no acces to the internet such as iPhone other devices, even browsing the internet on the laptop im updating i get then no connection error.

Its as if the router refuses internet as long as theres a direct persistant download happening on a machine, im with eircom and have their basic router they sent out for free. Im thinking its a setting in the router somewere thats causing this? Any ideas aon what to check? thanks guys!

It's hard to tell but my first guess would be a contension problem - this is where eircom tell you they are providing you with a 1MB (or whatever) internet connection but what they don't tell you is that you have to share the bandwidth with other people on the same circuit. So, if Mary accross the road is downloading donkey porn and your laptop is downloading updates, well, there goes the allotted bandwidth.

Reset the router back to default. There's usually a reset button somewhere..

Thats what I would do first. Seems a strange one all right

I don't think this is an issue anymore for most people.

I would disconnect from network, disable automatic updates temporarily, power cycle your router, reconnect to network, then go to eircom.net/speedtest and test your connection speed.

Then see if multiple devices and apps are able to access the resources.

It could also be a program installed incorrectly (I'm thinking AV, Norton etc,).

Don't forget to re-enable automatic updates.

Any chance your neighbour is downloading that donkey porn that yeppydeppy mentioned using your connection?
