Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

What is your ultimate goal in life?

I was thinking about this the other day and I realised I havent got a clue what my goal is. I have many little goals, but they're all to be achieved within the next 5 years. I can't even think of any one ultimately big thing I want to do.

Is there any one thing that you aim to have achieved by the time you die?

To have the option to continue 'working' or not.
To be financially free, the earlier the better.

Isn't that the point of going to work anyway?

To represent my country at something, however the only three talents I would be worthy enough to represent our great nation at are:

    1) ****
    2) Acting the eejit
    3) Sneaky fingering

And I don't see any of those becoming a World Championships before I die, maybe a European Title alright but not a World one :P

I do not have a life goal.

I always believe that people who think if I achieve "x" I would be happy are deluded.

Basic. basic human nature, Maslow's Hierarcy of needs.

A few generations ago people may have thought if I have enough to eat every day I will be happy.

Now being happy has become an end in itself but happiness is fleeting and almost impossible to quantify. It is basically chemicals in your brain sending out the message- all is well.

The point of work is to meet those goals while also maintaining an otherwise unmaintainable lifestyle.

This man has the option to work or not and is financially free, but he probably wouldn't be able to maintain your lifestyle or mine.

I recently had to increase the notches on my belt, from 34 to 36.

Middle age spread is a bitch.

It scares me that, at 26, I don't really have any proper goals. I still don't know what I want career-wise. I don't want children. I would like to get married though. Ideally I would love to earn enough money in my 30s and 40s to be able to retire in my 50s and travel the world as a carefree hippy. Jeez I really need some ambitions...

For some crazy reason the only ambition I can think of is to eventually get my crap together go greyhound racing...

Weird, I don't know where that came from...

To get my novel published. And made it a massive, well-respected film.

If that doesn't happen, I'll settle for being happy.

To instigate a coup d'etat in a South American nation.

Seriously though, do many people really have an 'ultimate goal'? I'm sure most people would like to be financially secure in their later years but would anyone ever really reach a point where they achieve something and just say "Right, that's me done. Time to put the feet up and have a cup of tea."

My only life-goal is to be able to say at the end of it, "Yeah, I lived well." If I were to die at any moment, I'd like people to be able to say, "At least she lived a full life" and not, "She was robbed - she hadn't lived at all yet."

I've plenty of other goals, and other ambitions, but none other than the one above that I could genuinely call a life goal.

Mmm. Was just wondering really. Maybe it's the scientist in me but I would have imagined more people would like to contribute something to the world. Knowledge and such.

To never, ever, have an "ultimate goal in life".

Because, sure, what would be the point after having achieved that?!

Lots of little goals and achievements, changing all the time, are way better and more fun than one big scary "ultimate" one!!!
