Hey all,

How do i tell if a cat has been neutered? Its male by the way!

Are you serious? Well neutering means castrating. Hence if his balls are still there he is not neutered, if they aren't than he is neutered.

Can I ask how you know it's male? Is this a cat you've found or recently taken in? If he's not neutered he will have quite obvious balls underneath his anus. It's actually quite a common thing micheleabc for owners to have cats many months or years thinking they have the opposite sex and it's only when they bring their 'male' cat in for neutering or their 'pregnant female' in that their told the cat is just in fact fat and of the opposite sex!

I see your point Zapperzy, but OP's doubts are about the possibility of the cat neutered or not rather than the gender. Perhaps OP should give more details about the cat?

I can see how someone might be confused as to whether they own a neutered male or a female, that's why I asked how they know the cat is male in the first place as it may very well be a female cat, wouldn't want the OP thinking just because it lacked balls it's a neutered male for them to get a surprise of 6 bundles of fluff in a few weeks time!

Then there's the possibility of a male having retained testicles although fairly uncommon.

Zapperzy its a cat we recently found. I took it to vets and they checked sex and if it was microchipped which it wasn't. Thanks for the diagram!
Should have asked vet about whether it was neutered but wasn't thinking!!

The testicles should be very visible in an unneutered male...but...sometimes it can be deceptive. Its much harder to tell in a female if not impossible. My cats hair around that area grew back in an oval shape believe it or not, so it actually still looks like hes still intact until you have a feel Must take a pic later to show ya!

Good on ye for taking it in and checking for a microchip, the time I got my cat chipped the vet told me I was mad and even asked was it the same chip they use for dogs (I'm on good terms with her so no insult was intended!), so nice to know there are a few people out there who check cats for chips if mine ever went missing!

Anyways have a look and feel down there and you'l soon see! Are ye keeping him?
