I'm doing Environmental Protection in the College so I presume the online course isn't very different I must say I love it. Its a tough enough course but well worth it

    Hi guys,

Thanks for the replies. Did you both do the courses online? Did ye do Env management followed by protection?

I'm very interested in the course but Im a bit concerned by the weight it carries, will it be respected by employers and indeed will there be jobs available?

    HI

i was one of the first class to graduate from the BSc in Environmental Managment (online) in IT SLigo. For me it was a very positive experience,

I was looking for an environmental degree but as i work full time i wanted to be able to do it part time. This course suited me perfect because the majority of the course was delivered trhough online lectures and a few weekend workshops.

THe online lectures were great, in that you could view the lecture live or download them later on. THis was great because you didnt have to be in front of the computer at a particular time, so if you got stuck up town or were still at work you could download the lecture later that night or later that week! It also was handy for revision as you could access it as many times as you wanted or if u couldnt grasp a particular concept. To ask a question you typed it into the Moodle program and the whole experience was very interactive.

THe degree covers a broad area of environemtal managment with a number of mandatory modules and a number of modules that the class could decide on. THe lecturers provided feedback through email but attending the weekend workshops was very important as it brought the "classroom feeling" to the online experience, which i thought added to it overall.

You will be required to complete a small dissertation or project on an environmental area of interest to you, write it up and present it to the class and examiners. This puts you through researching an environmental topic that you actually have an interest in yourself, not something just given to you to do.

The best thing about this degree for me was that i was able to work full time, manage this degree at my own pace and still have a social life.

If youd like to chat over the phone about it thats not a problem
Hope this answered some of your questions..

Hey great write up, thanks very much for taking the time to do so! You sure though you're not affiliated with IT Sligo? :) ha

Very helpful information though. I currently work full time also so the online aspect really appeals to me. If you don't mind me probing, what area are you working in at the moment? Is there much call this days for Env Managers?

    Thanks again.

    howya.

Im a public servant working in the fisheries sector. Due to the morotorium sadly there are no jobs in the public sector per se, but i have taken on extra resonsiblities in my job so im using the degree a bit, not to the extent id like to, but sadly thats the way things are. I havent been in touch with most of the class since we graduated apart from colleagues of my own who done it so not sure what jobs are out there in the private sector. I paid for the course myself so i would like to get into that area but i have to respect what i have at the minute!

I have just got accepted into the Bsc Enviro Mgmt for this coming September so went looking to see if there were was any feedback.
Sounds good based on your experience.
Im working full time also, so now the reality is starting to dawn on me that I have a lot of work to do.
@ Nokia:In your experience, how may hours per week did you spend studying / watching lectures?

It really depends on what understanding u have of environmental management matters that u have. some of us had a backround either in work or in college in waste mgt, waste water mgt or water quality issues. that made some of the topics a lot easier but then we had to get our head around other topics such as Environmental Impact assessment, which we hadnt a clue about!

Its nothing to be afraid of though, as a lot of the class came from a total different background, both academically and work related. Youll have to find out what your strengths are, what u understand easier and then figure out what u need to put in. Reading the notes and going back over them after the online lectures is probably the most important thing to do, this doesnt take long but it will concrete the material into your brain which will help hugely when doing revision for the exams and continous assessments.

If u know someone on the course, studying with them occasionally along with doing the assignments together can give u a way better grasp and understanding. I would reccomend getting friendly with someone on the course and developing this relationship, unless u really prefer working on your own.

Dont leave the assignments till the last minute either, this will wreck your head because the dates for them to be in may be similar.

I hope i havent confused u more. get back to me if u want to chat and ill give you my phone number. Thanks

Thanks Nokia7799, very decent of you to go back to me.
    Good advice.
I have the opposite problem, I'm working as an Enviro Mgr (waste mgmt, WWTP, IPPC, EMS etc) but have no formal qualification other than IEMA. This course will suit my work / life situation. If ok with you I will
take you up on your offer to chat, just to get a handle on books needed, hours per week and time per year in Sligo.
If I can be of any help to you work wise I will return the favour.

    Hi lads,
I have been accepted into the level 7 2 year environmental management course in sligo and have another week to confirm my place starting in September. Just wondering how you got on with it over overall and with hindsight all these years later was it a good course to do? Was there many presentations? I have a bad anxiety issue with standing up and talking to a group but I suppose presentations come with most courses these days. What are the job prospects like once completed?
I'm currently out of work and looking to change my direction but have a big interest in the environment in general, I have a degree in exercise and health but it led to nothing.
    Any information would be appreciated.

Dont let being out of work put you off doing the course, there is a good mix of people working and not working in the course I have just finished. You will have the advantage of having more time to complete assignments and revise for exams etc when not working. Disadvantage though will be not having an practical experience to relate to the course.
Overall the course has good points and bad. The good is the combination of online delivery and workshops in Sligo. The bad is that not all modules have lectures, some of the lecturers give you the notes and off you go, very little support on some of the subjects. Dont let that cloud your decision though, the classmates will support each other. Re job prospects, pure environmental jobs are rare, you may need to specialise in something or combine this with health and safety. Hope this helps, if you need anything else come back through this forum.

Just to bump this thread am currently thinking of doing Health & Safety online with Sligo- how did you find the workload? There seems to be a lot of continously assessment, are trips to Sligo expected, how does it work exactly.are the end of term exams held the same day? Thanks

    Hi Jadie

Not sure if you meant to bump the BSC Enviro online thread, when you mention your looking at the H&S course.

Anyways - I am in year two of this course and i have to say its pretty good. Very practically based content, that's readily applicable (IPPC,ETS,EIS...etc...). This is the second course I have done with IT Sligo and would say that both courses have been pretty well structured.

Normally the courses have a kick off day in IT Sligo (orientation) but its not mandatory to attend. You normally do one full day meet & great per semester with course assignments and lecture (either in Athlone, Port Laois or IT Sligo). Sometimes there are group projects, but they ask groups to be geographically based so you don't have to travel that much.

Course(s) normally consists of online lectures from 1-2 hours in length and maybe, 2-3 of these a week over 12 weeks, provided online via Adobe Connect (very handy) + continuous assessment

Continuous assessments are normally a mix of a few; Projects, Essays, Multiple Choice Questionnaires, or Presentations. Normally the split is 50/50 for continuous assessment vs final exam, and the continual assessment is normally ok as long you mange your time. All content is held online via moodle, with live lecture recordings (very handy for last minute cramming). Exams can be done in DIT, IT Sligo and marine College Cork (normal type exam hall done in Jan and May)

Would email the course coordinator and ask for the intro to the course structure. They normally will give you the presentation from the course induction day in PPT format, which breaks down all of the above information.

    Hope that helps
