Will the surrounding residents give over and allow night flying in and out of Weston anytime soon?

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,349 ✭✭✭Kenny2012

Runway has no lights so won't be happening anytime soon.

Surely be to God it wouldn't take too much time to install lighting Kenny?

Requires planning permission which wouldn't be approved, too many objections from local residents. Easy for you to say "would the residents ever get over it" but you don't live there they do, they are entitled to a quiet life within reason of course. Yes the airfield was there before them but only ever as a daytime operation never as a nighttime operation.

Planning permission, objections from residents, who'd a thunk it eh.

A cut off time of say 11pm could be issued, that's reasonable, I actually live very close to an International airport myself and there's little issue with a time as I suggested.

There's a lot of student pilots that are keeping Weston going, butter Westons' bread and keep the place afloat, yet the majority that continue on from PPL to CPL with which a Night Rating is compulsory...Have to head off an fly the rating elsewhere.

    Bit of a joke really.

Been there, done that, shredded the T shirt a long time ago, and your comment above re training is the problem that will get the phones hopping if it were to happen.

An arrival or departure (at night is irrelevant) is relatively noise free, especially with modern small jets and turbo props, and doesn't cause much disruption, whereas training circuits, or even worse, training circuits in a twin that's simulating an engine failure so using max power on the other engine is guaranteed to cause problems, as small light twins that are the mainstay of CPL training are also very prone to making significant noise due to the prop tips going sonic when at high revs and in fine pitch, and that generates a very penetrating noise envelope, and circuits are flown at lower levels than "normal" in / out operations. It was worse back in the days when certain people regarded anything above 300Ft as a waste of time and fuel, so they crawled round not much above the rooftops.

That said, there are people in the Weston area who moved there in full knowledge that there was and is an active general aviation airfield there, so they really shouldn't be complaining if the airfield then does what it is meant to, provide facilities for aircraft to operate in and out.

The added complication is that Dublin is no longer suitable for piston powered aircraft, as there's now no fuel available there for them, and small (slower) piston types really screw up the flow to the active runway when things are busy, so that means going somewhere else, which is a problem at night, the nearest available fuel is going to be some distance away, Shannon or Cork, or not even in state at Belfast.

That's not a lot of help for something like a Navajo that's operating a medical transport flight, so yes, there is a case for being able to get GA aircraft into the Dublin area 24/7. and provide services for them, which the present hostile environment at Weston does not allow for, and there's no facilities available at Baldonnel, so very limiting.
    .

Shore, if it was easy, everybody would be doin it.😁

    .

You know a former owner of Weston didn't help matters in his ' build first apologise after ' way of doing things, gave local residents things to complain about.

There are certain local Politicians who seem to revel in stirring it up. As I have said in this forum before I still meet people who are ' told by local Politicians that without their intervention Ryanair would be flying in/out of there ' which is total nonsense of course ! . TBH people should be careful what they wish for , there was a time on the early 2000's when I thought we would end up with a another load of faceless legolands build on there .

It would be great if Weston could be developed as the GA field for Dublin , it has the space and facilities , but I don't see it ever happening .

Anyway , love dropping in there to see the visitors and watching the stuff over my house , the Caravans have been an interesting noise/sight over the last few months.

Politicians accepting credit for something they didn't do or would never have happened, shocker. That's politicians for you.

Problem is at the moment Weston is barely justifying its existence, hopefully this summer onwards it'll start regaining its former ground.

It was actually two C150s (1 was a Reims Aerobat) they were operating not C152s.

Anyway I don't think the are to much anymore. I can't seem to find their Facebook page anymore.

Yikes that a low powered 400A.... that has to be runway limited from Weston, I would prefer taking a G3 in there rather than the Diamond/Beechjet/Hawker :)

I am interested why these switched from South African to Australian regn half way , was it tax reasons ?

But it will be a shame to see them go , along with the other visitors that were linked ( wasn't there a Seneca in/out supporting them or something )

    Hi David,
There were no other aircraft supporting this operation.
