Wouldn't normally indicate when nothing is around, but at the moment my front left indicator is not working so I over compensate with the right, even when it's not necessary

    It's not a bother, it's a reflex.

It's like co-ordinating the clutch, gearstick, handbrake and accellerator in a hillstart. Learners think about this stuff; I don't even notice my hand/feet moving, I just drive off.
If it's a reflex then you are doing it out of habit as opposed to determining the appropriateness given the current circumstances.
You are bordering on the indicate and turn in one manoeuvre that we all know too well from the ooh there's my exit 3 lane sweep off the motorway or the next fare on the far side of the road u-turn.
I have no problem with indicating or not, the bundling indicating with turning automatically doesn't convey the same information as a considered indicate.

It's not asking should i, it's asking what information exactly am I conveying and is it appropriate or even possibly confusing if I do.

Bad drivers who think they are good drivers think about it. Especially the ones who 'know' there is nobody close enough to make any difference whether they indicate or not.

It confirms that you will turn left (some people do abuse lanes, you know...) and serves as a warning to pedestrians or cyclists who might try to cross your path.
I look in my rear view mirrors, I look ahead, and if there are no cars around then not indicating is not affecting anyone.
    Oh dear!
